As a long time fan of Georges Simenon's books, I was impressed by the recent Maigret productions featuring the usually comedian actor Roan Atkinson, but only four stories. So I searched for other Maigret movies, expecting to find some French productions which I would be equally happy with as my French is fluent. I found no French ones but found this set of BBC productions with Michael Gambon, and I was delighted to find them truly superb, He captures the essence of the Maigret character and although in English, the settings in Paris are very convincingly staged. I gather from the credits that much of the period locations were actually filmed in Budapest, but it is very convincing even for me who knows the streets of Montmartre very well. These are truly superb productions in every way and highly recommendable and do full justice to Simenon's story genius.Read full review
