About this product

Product Information

Francis Ford Coppola directed this truly American story based on the real-life struggles of one man and his fight against big government and large corporations. In 1945 Michigan, Preston Tucker (Jeff Bridges) created a car for the future equipped with fuel injection, a center headlight, seat belts, a rear engine, disc brakes, shatterproof glass, and a pop-out windshield. With the support of his wife (Joan Allen), his son (Christian Slater), and his business manager (Martin Landau in an Academy Award-nominated performance), Tucker produced fifty of his dream cars. However, Detroit's Big Three, with the help of a Washington senator (played by Jeff Bridges's father, Lloyd, in an uncredited role), set up significant roadblocks. Tucker is investigated for fraud and his plant is closed. Coppola had been planning to make a film based on the life of Preston Tucker since 1974. His own struggle to retain independence from the Hollywood studios mirrors the auto maverick's story. Of the 50 cars Tucker made, 46 are still roadworthy (Coppola and Executive Producer George Lucas each own one). Pop musician Joe Jackson composed the music for the film.

Tucker Should be in the Media Library of Every Home In America

Tucker Should be in the Media Library of Every Home In America. It is important that our children know every aspect of this nation's history. We should never forget how the rich and powerful can squash a man's or woman's dream. I first saw this movie in theaters. I consider it both educational and entertaining. It was interesting to discover that many of the features on cars that we take for granted today were first introduced by Tucker. Furthermore, these same features were initially ridiculed and rejected by the three major car manufacturers, and that Ford, General Motors and Chrysler have more than been paid back for what they did to Mr. Tucker. While they worked so hard to keep one more American from realizing the, American Dream, in the years since, multiple foreign car manufacturers ...

  • Tucker: The Man and His Dream

This is the story of Preston Tucker and his magnificent 1940s Tucker automobile. Well done all around. Except for a few principals, a cast of generally unknown faces which adds to its enjoyable documentary-like nature. I love the film - had the opportunity to sit in a Tucker circa 1947-48, but no free ride! So I wanted to see the history and those gorgeous cars! My one complaint - the original film was made in 70mm wide-screen. It seems that instead of letter-boxing on the DVD, the digitizer processors chose to snip off the edges and compress the center portion, so people seem slimmer, and the autos look shorter and thinner than normal in many scenes. The stars of the film are the Tucker cars computer-copied in a rainbow of colors (I think more than the originals). Fiddling with their ...

  • Tucker 40s Automobile

Well executed, characters are awesome. Good plot based on a true story. American greed between the auto companies. Even tho Tucker was a better automobile, well beyond the vision of his creator. Innovations that did not take hold into late the 1970s early 80s.

  • What a car!

Coppola movies are great, and this production is fine. After reading two books about Tucker you come to realize "it's a movie" and that so much of the life of Preston Tucker has been glossed over. The car has lived on, a cherished piece of automobile history.

  • Tucker: The Man and His Dream (DVD, 2000)

In 1945, Preston Tucker attempted to enter the automotive business in Detroit. His ideas were far advanced for his day with ideas of building cars with safety glass windows, and seat belts. These improvements were ridiculed by the heads of the Big Three car makers, who claimed Tucker's vehicle was so unsafe that they were needed. He designed his engines to be rear mounted for greater power and cooler passenger compartments, offering fuel injection for greater gas mileage. Tucker sold a lot of people on investing in his ideas, and when he was leased a large war-defense plant all of the BIG THREE circled their wagons and went after him. All of a sudden, there was no steel available to Tucker, then glass couldn't be purchased. When he purchased a plant that built helicopter air-cooled ...
