Inspired by the NES game Super Dodge Ball and its "Kunio" characters (familiar to gamers who have played Double Dragon, Renegade, and River City Ransom), Super Dodgeball Brawlers expands on the classic schoolyard game of bombardment. Players can now unleash more than 100 special attacks, including the cactus attack, the panda shot, and the spear, or more violent gamers can simply pummel opponents with punches, kicks, and weapons. Over the course of a match a meter fills, allowing players to boost a teammate's status or unleash an "instant kill" with a flick of the touch screen. Create-a-character and create-a-team modes let gamers build the perfect dodge ball squad, and players can go head-to-head against a friend or take part in an eight-player street brawl.

Super Dodge Ball on the DS
Super Dodge Ball Brawlers (SDBB) is a throwback to a great but also little known game from the old NES. SDBB does well in keeping true to that original NES titles which is one of my favorite video games of all time. In addition, improvements have been made. Of course the graphics are better on the DS game but there are added features such as making your own team and players, the ability to throw punches at the opposition and playing as any of the teams in teh one-player mode (the NES version only let you play as Team USA in single player mode). The old favorites are here like Iceland and India as well as new challengers like Egypt. For some reason, throwing an airborne super ball is much easier than throwing a ground-based one. This is really my only complaint in the game. For some reason, your players just can't unleash the ground-based super throw at times. There doesn't seem to be a method to this other than running and throwing. Why it doesn't work part of the time but does other times is beyond me. There is a tournament mode that can go on forever if you want it to. There is a finals match but you can go through the tournament with your same team and earn more cash and experience. Cash allows you to buy skill-modifying items in the dodgeball store like armor and better hands. Experience points unlocks other items to buy. There are three skill settings so there is a challenge. I was pretty proficient at the original NES game on the most difficult level. On the DS, "normal" offers some impressive resistance. Timing a catch and executing a power throw are more difficult in this game. All in all, I am very satisfied with this title. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

If you're like me, you have memories of a great little sports game to play with friends in which two teams pelt each other with dodge balls in a turning spanning across the globe. Super Dodgeball was apart of the immensely successful Japanese only Kunio-kun series; finding sequels on the Super Nintendo, the Turbo Grafx 16, the Neo Geo, the Nintendo GBA, and even the arcade. This is the latest sequel to that series. Kunio and his hot blooded friends return for another dodgeball tournament, and with the all new ability to punch and kick, and buy supplemental items, they're out to win the world tournament. Needless to say, this is a pretty cheap game. It's effectively the classic Super Dodgeball with some extremely minor enhancements. Still though, it is classic Super Dodgeball; you catch, throw, and pass the ball, and you pelt your opponents with super moves. New to the game however is the ability to punch and kick as well as throw items that get scattered over the ground, this definitely being a nod to a more famous game in the Kunio-kun series, known here in America as River City Ransom.The game still plays kind of like a cheap Flash game though. The visual style also feels kind of cheap. The characters all have that classic Kunio-kun style but quite frankly the game doesn't look as good as it could. It was done at it's best in terms of art and animation on the arcade and Neo Geo. It looks classic... but it stays too heavily nestled in that fact. The music is comprised of classic Kunio-kun tunes and sounds, but there's nothing to really talk about here. Where this game shines is in the very detailed and elaborate character creation mode which allows you to create your own team, your team's special power, and all of your team members as well as their super shots. It's a great way to personalize your experience but the only downside it you're team will be nowhere near as good as the pre-made teams which is so lame. This game also somewhat shines in it's multiplayer capability, what with a variety of different multiplayer modes, it definitely catches the party spirit of Super Dodgeball. There's one major problem however... there's no online functionality, and all of the people you have to play with need a copy of the game as well, limiting, possibly even crippling it's multiplayer capability. While this is a cheap game, it's still fun to play, and fun to make your own dodgeball team. At the same time, it's apart of a series that's always been excellent. If you can find this game for cheap, which you most likely will, and you're a fan of Super Dodgeball or River City Ransom, you'll enjoy Super Dodgeball Brawlers

It was a good find, I wanted it because it reminded me of my dad so that's why I got it. I like it cause of the skills you can use though I have forgotten how to unlock them all. Its an average product that is actually hard to find now.
