About this product

Product Information

Chandler's first novel introduced private detective Philip Marlowe, and THE BIG SLEEP set the standard for private detective movies. Down-at-the-heels private eye Marlowe gets the assignment to clean up after the daughters of a dying millionaire, but dead people have a nasty habit of trailing in their wake. The famously tortuous story line (Hawks supposedly asked Chandler to clarify a plot point about the murder of the family chauffeur; the novelist hadn't a clue as to who did the deed) seems beside the point when Bogart and Bacall are onscreen. The final release was recut to include more of their scenes together. A must! Remade in 1978.

I had a wonderful experience with this seller. He answered every communication and, there were five of them., lol. He even went so far as to answers questions that I had not thought of like whether the drive socket was dry or not. The product arrived as described and was well packaged. And the item was shipped expeditiously. The product was well worth the value. ❤️

Good seller ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐, quick communication & response to messages. Great customer service. Interesting Ebay asks about shipping? Shipping was completely ridiculous & so unacceptable. The package was delivered totally beatup & destroyed. Pieces were sticking out of the box in at least 3 places. The box wasn't even double boxed anymore, as described by seller. Who knows what they did to it, but it broke some critical piece off of the tool. The seller quickly offered to make it right. Thank you !!!

One of the great film noirs

Excellent. However, it's unfortunate the censors wouldn't allow more from the Raymond Chandler book it was based on into the movie. That would have made the plot a bit more understandable, but the viewer can read between the lines easy enough. What is very understandable is Bogart, as usual, steals the film. No one has ever, or will ever play a hard-boiled private eye as well as he could.

  • Eliot Gould is not Humphrey Bogart or Robert Mitchum

I loved The Big Sleep and I thought Farewell My Lovely was good, too. It's another Marlowe story and this one is just a little whacky. One reason I was drawn to it was Jim Bouton is in it. Baseball fans of a certain age know who he was. I say 'was' because he just passed the day before I bought this. I had another copy of this but I moved and haven't been able to find it yet. I decided to quit looking for it and buy another. Now, I know the other will show up. Another thing about this film is his cat is gone by the end. I hope this doesn't spoil it for you. When the Showtime series Ray Donovan started, there's an episode where Eliot Gould's character is looking for his lost cat. We are then told he hasn't had a cat in 40 years. Ray Donovan came out in 2013, this film was released in 1973. ...

  • Two versions and that's a good thing.

This dvd contains two versions of the movie. Version one has lots of missing plot detail. Version two has less plot detail and more character detail between Bogey and Bacall. The first version is absolutely great and answers so many plot questions that version two omits.

  • Bogie And Bacall

This film, based on a Raymond Chandler Philip Marlowe novel--William Faulkner had a hand in the scripting--is a classic noir film with a complex and very tangled plot, the principals famously said, and this includes Faulkner, they really weren't sure what exactly happens--But, it is wonderful in its enigmatic nature, especially Bogart and Bacall, worth viewing for the first or umpteenth time!
