  • A Very Good Police Drama/Psycho Killer Film

It had already been noted that the title doesn't say much about the film. I thought, as I watched this BD the first time, "The Hollywood Strangler" would be better. Robert Hammer states in his commentary track that the film's working title WAS The Hollywood Strangler but it had to be changed, not because the title was taken, instead because someone liked the title so much that they wanted it for another production. Evidently, he had to surrender the working title to keep his financiers and continue filming. This is a very good Police Drama/Psycho Killer film. It has a strong cast with solid acting throughout. I bought this because it is Pamela Bryant's film debut and also because Susanne Severeid was cast for it. It seemed to me that Mr. Hammer was in a hurry when he filmed the sequences for these two actresses and I wish he had spent more time and more thought about their intrinsic value to a film of this type. Robert Hammer injects some humorous sequences with the crime investigation unit. The lead investigators, McCabe and Hatcher, are not bungling buffoons; instead, he intersperses a few light hearted sequences that the audience needs. There is even a forensics expert assigned to the unit who is good at what he does but is perhaps a bit insensitive, as he tries to play down the seriousness with an "I've seen it before" attitude--he's cocky and he doesn't care if he comes off the wrong way. Some might even say he is obnoxious. This is a HD 1080p BD (playback) from Vinegar Syndrome and it really looks great. The film is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1. It's definitely worth buying. I wish Vinegar Syndrome had made this a 4K Ultra HD with Blu-ray Disc two-disc set.
