Very user friendly receiver highly recommend!! It’s not entry level but has enough stuff to make it worth it!!

It’s a great mid level receiver. Has a ton of features but comes with great tv or video ups along making picture great has enough inputs and outputs for today’s modern convieniences! Air play ,Dolby atoms second room audio and video currently running cerwin Vega xls6 and sc25 speakers in front with a Yamaha 100 watt ten inch sub and it fills the 20x24’ area well! The large letter display is easy to read and on screen set up is easy though a long process! Apps to control with smart phone! Audessey mic helps calibrate for superb sound! I like onkyo sound vs others stuff seems easier to set up! This set up is at parents place .. they are over 70 and love it!! I have an older tx nr 3007 running in 11.2 but picture upscaling is improved on this new unit as well as other features!!

  • Top critical review

As I said before, I really wanted this receiver to work the first time around I guess it's just my luck I hope it's an easy return so I can quickly ge

Unfortunately setting up this unit after setting the speakers it continuously is shutting itself off. I have asked a few of my friends to help me out with this and same results. Now I have an appointment tonight from 6 till 8 p.m. for a Geek Squad member to come out and assess this problem. I told the guy on the phone about it he says it sounds like it's capacitor is bad. That is beyond my education so I will definitely let you know what the results are. I am so disappointed, I did not want to send this back. I hate returns of any kind but having to ship something is such a pain. Not to mention the cost. I did not want to give a review until after his assessment of this receiver but you put it in front of my face I couldn't help myself. I would love to keep this receiver or swap it out for a new one but the fact remains I'm going to have to ship it back to whoever and it's more stress and Hassle and time. The Geek Squad charges $130 to do this. That's why I asked my friends first but to no avail. Heil let you know after tonight.

  • AWSOME!!!!

I had a tx nr609 and it sounded great. I switched to the 686 primarily for the wifi and chromecast features, but to my surprise the sound blew me away. It is awsome and so easy to setup. I highly recommend this unit. Awsome absolutely awsome.

  • Excellent advanced receiver at an excellent price

Out of the brands of reasonably-priced audio equipment, Onkyo is known to offer the most bang for-the-buck in terms of features and technology, while being on par with others on sound quality. This receiver was highly rated in some of the reviews, and it didn't disappoint. Got it from Best Buy as an open box, but there was really no sign of any prior use, a great deal.

  • Great Receiver, but difficult to set up.

It is a great AV Receiver, but the manual that is downloaded is hard to follow. 135 pages to go through to make sure you know what all the features are and how to set them up.

  • Great price for a lot of features

Great price for a lot of features and power. I have outdoor speakers that I'm using the Zone 2 connection for. My old receiver I would just hit the Zone 2 button on the receiver but this receiver has you press and hold 2 buttons on the remote then press another button which is not user friendly.

  • Superior Sound!

I've always been a Yamaha guy but decided to give this a try for our vacation house. Far exceeded expectations and like the versatility of fully controlling 2 seperate zones. Very clean sound quality with plenty of power. There are tons of different configurations so it's a good idea to spend the time to read through the instructions to make the right sound adjustments that fits your personal needs. A great powerful receiver that's highly recommended!

  • Yes and No: Decent sound but confusing menus

First of all, this is my second Onkyo receiver in less that two years and third overall. It was an open box from Best Buy and the price is right. I am worried that this one may not last long either. The reason I bought it was because the shipping and repair costs for my old one would have been as much as the cost of this one. I have had many problems trying to EQ the audio. The menus are confusing and elaborate and I still haven't figured out how to specifically tailor each speaker. Remember knobs and faders? I miss those. None of the pre-set audio settings seem really suitable for my system, especially when playing music. I have tried emailing their customer support a couple of times without a response. So--it has plenty of inputs and outputs, plenty of power and looks big and black. But Onkyo's track record of reliability (at least for me) and the utterly confusing menus make setting up and operating this thing difficult. You decide. For me, the open-box price of $250 is what sold it.
