Superb lens giving sharp, well detailed results with my Nikon d5500. The colour rendition of the lens is excellent, well up to Nikon's high standards and the good performance extends through the range of focal lengths, maximum impact being in the F5.6 to F8 aperture settings. Buy a good used one (not available new anymore) and you will not be dissapointed.

I was well aware that it was a used lens and a bit worn but that it could not make sharp images is somewhat disappointing

It is almost the perfect walk around lenses. Specially designed for Nikon DX digital cameras. You never miss a shot. Optical design optimized for APS-C sensors. Great optical performance. Compact, sharp with low distortions. Sharpness is even across the frame. The zoom action is quite stiff whereas the small focus ring operates pretty smooth. 0.38 m/1.3 ft. closest focus distance throughout the entire zoom range. Rounded seven-blade diaphragm opening makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural. Maximum aperture f/3.5-5.6, Stops down to f/22-36. Fast autofocus with manual ring priority. Silent wave AF motor - ensures quiet operation. Thanks to an internal focusing design the front does not rotate so using a polarizer is no problem. 67 mm filter attachments. The lens is equipped with 2nd generation vibration reduction (VR II ) - normal and active VR mode equivalent up to a gain of 4 f-stops. ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements minimize chromatic aberration while providing higher resolution and superior contrast. Solid build quality - compact and lightweight (485 g/17.1 oz.). The outer body is made of plastic whereas the inner tubes as well as the sealed mount are made of metal.Read full review
I have already owned Nikon's 18-70 and also have an 18-200 which is 'resident' on a D90, but the 16-85 is my preferred choice as a walkabout lens on my D300s. Despite this lens's reasonable cost, the quality of the images it takes came as very pleasant surprise - impressive sharpness and contrast and a pleasing rendition of colour tones at all aperture settings, but obviously things are at their best when you stop down to f/5.6 or f/8. There's a tendency amongst some to sneer at 'kit' lenses, but the 16-85 has gained some great reviews and is capable of truly superb images - the rest is up to the photographer .... ;-)
This is a superb lens for everyday work for a huge variety of situations. Probably the perfect general purpose lens for when you want to wander with just your camera. The vibration reduction system is first rate and allows you to take shots hand held at very slow speeds. The focussing system is very good but occasionally struggles with low contrast scenes but tweaking it manually is east. The only down side I have found is that occasionally the focus assist beam stops working and the only way to start it again is to either do a system reset or take the lens off and put it on again. This was second hand and the previous owner made no mention of it but it does not happen often but is annoying when it does.
