I've loved Raytheon 12ax7 black plates from first listen. A sonic character unlike any other tube. Provides a wonderful clear, bell-like "mellowness" to guitar tones in clean mode, and also a wonderful creaminess when overdriven. But a creaminess with a punch. A unique tube unequaled by any modern version.

The tubes are exactly as described. They are in the process of burning in and still need to relieve some of their top end glare, but are well on their way. Every several hours they blossom just a little bit more. I look forward to the time when they are fully burned in.

I play with it for 3hrs tonight...going back n forth with a JJ ECC803S. Through VHT special 6 Head with a RCA 6L6 in a 1945 RCA projector cab with the original MI-6333B RCA speaker and a Strat. Both have long plates. The Raython is very bright...very Glassy sounding. I've never herd these sounds before. Very Quite extremely articulate. Never owned a really good preamp tube. Turned up it was warmer and fatter sounding, sooo Cool. When I played SRV bass lines like Rude Mood or So Excited it was tight and focused...I never sounded so good!!! Very Musical!! I need 10 more for my Kendrick Amps!!!

I'm a big fan of Raytheon tubes anyway, so I wanted to see if this Gold Pin 7729 variety was indeed an actual improvement over the 12AX7 smooth black plates I've been using in V1 (Princeton Reverb) and V2 ('64 Vibroverb, '67 Vibrolux Reverb, '66 Deluxe Reverb). It is...!!! You get remarkable clarity and range just like the 12AX7, just more of it...!!!

One of the very, very best vintage tubes you can buy. The price/performance ratio is outstanding, as this tube rivals the best, most expensive European tubes for tone and overall performance. Out of all the USA vintage tube brands, Raytheon may be the best of the bunch. (Beware later Raytheon tubes, though. Around 1963, I believe, they began to outsource significant numbers of receiving tubes to Japan. You DON'T want those. You want legit, made in USA Raytheon)
