I've had my T7400 since 2011 and as of June 2015 the design still gives me excellent and affordable upgrade opportunities. The affordable upgrade potential and the reliability/stability/scalability is what makes the T7400 a 4.6 (92%) star. Because this precision workstation uses core components (CPU/Memory) common to Dell PowerEdge and other servers, used memory and fast processors are plentiful as large lots of servers come off lease. Demand is lower for the "server only" memory and CPU's and 4GB 667MHz FB ECC memory modules are running at about $1.25/GB. The optional memory riser adds 16 Dimm2.0 slots. This is not a be-all end-all workstation though- there are some motherboard design deficiencies, the design only has 3PCIe slots, (2x16bitPCIe2.0 and 1x8bPCIe wired as 4bit)...but as always there are work arounds. The lagacy PCIx100 slots are useful for muiti-port server network cards, and a clever user may be able to expand the PCIe bus in order to have dual video, RAID card and USB3.0. This workstation will remain current for several more years. Mine has 64GB ram, dual SSD, Raid50 (6x2tb), and a Intel Pro 1000MT dual port server NIC. I'm running Win Server2008r2 DC edition with "workstation" features enabled. The chassis is roomy too, easily accommodating 6hdds and 2ssds and if you're into modding you can add an additional internal HDD fan and fit 9 3.5 hdds and 4ssd's and still have room for either 1 more HDD or a DVD in the case. If you're a radical, (and I am) you can mount a larger external PSU on top and gain room for 8 more drives and 2x80mm hdd fans. Because of the BX standard the chassis is divided into three cooling zones, CPU/Mem, Card Cage, and HDD/PS. When I finally upgrade the motherboard I may not even have to change fan shrouds. Scoring- earns 91% on a 100 percent scale: The T7400 loses 6 points for lack of PCIe slots, 2 points for requiring an optional Nvidia SLI riser that sacrifices 3PCIe slots for the sake of 2, and 1 point for difficulty cleaning dust from behind the front silver bezel without opening the case.Read full review
Reviewers are suppose to review the product, not the purchasing process. MEGA machine. Literally... As in, its a HUGE full tower with enough bays to run SIX 3.5HDD drives. Configured at its best, this tower can pack in dual Quad-Core procs (non-hyperthreading) with 64GB of RAM (expandable with riser cards to 128GB), dual video cards, dual DVD writers... A machine designed with full out high end multimedia or CAD production in mind. Essentially the ability of a mini server the motherboard can handle normal SATA drives, or the higher speed SAS drives. Audio and network are nothing to write home about, as they're standard as 6 years has passed since the 2008 release. That being said, even with only 16GB used, the machine scores a 7.5 on the Experience Index for Win7 and a 7.9 for Win8 PRO both in 64bit variants. The machine is leaps and bounds over its predecessor the 690, as noise was an issue from the memory fan, and now this T7400 chassis is very quiet. With a ton of power available from the OEM power supply, plenty of I/O options with 7 USB2.0 ports (please don't be misinformed, the "eighth" USB port is a pin-out port for use by the 19-in-1 media card reader) 2 Firewire 400 ports, gigabit ether, and the rest of the normal gaumet. SUPER machine for the money you'd pay now, as these machine were WAY ABOVE the $5000 when they were new.Read full review
These older servers make a great desktop PC or any other project one might need. They have the horse power for large tasks, and come at a great price instead of the 5 grand they were when new. They may be a few years old, but for most home use, more than enough.

Fantastic machine, delivered as promised. Works, just add memory and HDDs. Contained the Quadro Pro 1700 video card so the machine booted, displayed information and is up and running as a linux computer. Great value because HDD & memory were readily available at low prices. S.T. Now, find a Nvidia GPU to plugin and create a machine learning platform.

I did purchase this used, but it was warrented to be in working order. The unit I received I was able to run the Dell diagnostics and establish that everything worked, but i have been unable to use this workstation because it has some RAID array that was disturbed, or some of the drives were taken out, and it has to be somehow reattached or renamed or something that mere mortals cannot do. So I have this expensive paper weight. Finally contacted the merchant and got no reply. To be honest I was over 30 days in replying, but really should at least have gotten a Bronx cheer for my efforts. I cannot recommend that anyone who isn't an IT expert purchase these machines.
