I bought this camcorder for general purposes and so far, it has blown me away with its picture quality. The camera does exceptionally well in daylight conditions; however, in low light conditions, the camera performs okay. This camera has shutter speed as well as aperture options which would come in handy when dealing with low light levels. I once filmed an indoor Christmas concert in low light conditions and the camcorder was able to capture all the highlights and detail. This camcorder has a good microphone with the option to attenuate the sound. The battery life isn't the best, but you can always buy a better, longer lasting battery. Overall, good picture quality, great sound quality, and with a bit of tweaking, good low light performance. The menu is easy to use and is user friendly. Great camera for what it's worth.Read full review
Five Star Camera! The Canon HF200 without a doubt is a super feature packed true full HD camera. I have this camera and paid more than I should have, but do not regret the purchase. At the Canon factory website (Shop usa canon) they are selling factory refurbished, good as new, HF200 for $349.99 includes shipping and warranty. I know someone who bought hers on ebay for around $400 and you can't even tell it was used. Bottom line is you can't go wrong with a fully functional Canon HF200 bought for under $450.00, or even $600 for that matter. These 1080 cameras rock! I didn't do a spec review on the HF200 because you can find that anywhere, but I did point you in the direction of where you can find it for $350.00, and that is the best advice anyone is going to give you.
I love this camera, already have the HF20 version which has a 32gb internal flash drive. I wanted another one and the HF200 is the same camera without the internal flash memory. The camera shoots excellent HD video, great zoom and very small and lightweight. I figured I could use the SD HD Class 10 cards I was using in my Canon T1i. NO DICE, explained below. I had 2 Class 10 SD cards that don't work. Why, they are FAKE, yes many of the SD cards sold out of China are FAKE, they are actually a Class 2 or 4 card relabeled as Class 10 and not fast enough to shoot HD video. My buddy just bought 2 16gb Class 10 Transcend cards and they are fake too, he bought them off Amazon. The vendor is giving him a refund immediatly, probably knows they are FAKE. I understand this camera also has problems with REAL Transcend branded cards. If you are thinking of a Canon Vixia HF200 I would suggest you get the HF20 with the internal memory and avoid the Memory Card issue. Finding a real 32gb SD HD Class 10 card will probably cost over $100 which makes the HF20 a better deal.Read full review
GOOD - Easy to use, good low light performance, cost effective. I own 3 HF200's to film bands in the club I work at. BAD - There is a small gap of missing audio (about 1 frames worth) at the end of each 2 Gb .mts clip. You can use a binary copy command line to rejoin the video clips into one continuous .mts clip with no gap, but it's another step that eats up disk space, and more important, time. Also, if using the 24p mode, spend $100 and get Cineform Neoscene, which deinterlaces the .mts and converts it to an uncompressed .avi for windows, or .mov for macs. That's the best workflow I've found so far.
This is a great little camera with just a couple flaws. The main one being that although you have manual control over shuuter and apeture, you do not have control over both at the same time. This one little thing makes it a consumer style camera insted of a prosumer camera. They do advertise that you have control over these features just have to read the fine print. if however you do not need that feature to be used at same time, this camera is excellent for many uses. I highly sugest getting the raynox 2.2x super macro lens to go with it as well as the stepup ring and a pl and uv lens filter to apply immediately to the camera.
