Depending on your use of this lens, you might be better off sticking with the 18-55 kit; lighter and just as sharp with Vibration Reduction. Go for this lens if you require professional durability and resistance, don't mind the heavy weight, and need faster focusing speeds.

Was looking for a fast standard zoom lens. There are the usual suspects (Tamron 17-50, Tokina 16-50 and Sigma 18-50), but this one was the only one I havn't tried yet. The build quality is superb - feels like a tank. The weather sealing is nice and it's the only one in the lineup with this feature. Of cause, the other lenses are not that heavy, but the build quality in metal is better than the others. Optically this lens is very very good. On a D300s the performance is outstanding. Contrasty and sharp pictures right from f2.8. A little strong CA's at 17 mm and full open aperture is nothing new in this league and can be corrected by software on the pc. The Tokina I had (then made by Pentax) had more CA's and wasn't that sharp. Incredibly fast auto focus makes this lens the perfect match to proffessional cameras. All in all - very recommendable.Read full review
Excellent lens in all terms - optics and build quality are fantastic. The Bokeh is fantastic the further you go towards the 55mm, the wide angle is great, you could actually feel how the good optical work on this lens by Nikon pays off.
