Next to the Nikon F2A and F2AS, this is the most rugged AI-indexing camera that Nikon has ever produced. In fact, in some ways, it's even nicer than the F2! It's film advance, for example, is buttery smooth, quite a bit smoother than the industrial-feeling F2's advance. Plus, it has a vertically traversing shutter, which allows for faster flash sync than the F2 can manage with its horizontal shutter. One of the things I've always liked about Nikkormats is the external Meter window. This comes in very handy when you're using the camera in vertical situations, like copying photos or documents -- or street photography, where you might not want to bring your camera up to your eye. The FT3 comes with the standard array of features you typically find on a full-featured mechanical camera. Shutter speeds from 1 second to 1/1000, plus B. Mirror lock-up. A hot shoe for flash. Because it has a vertical shutter, flash sync is at 1/125 instead of the typical 1/60 you see with horizontal shutter cameras. Its AI-indexing feature allows one complete access to the huge variety of AI and AIs lenses Nikon has produced over the last few decades. The FT3's meter is simple but accurate. It uses Nikon's tried and proven 60/40 meter weighting, where 60% of the weighting occurs within the large circle visible in the viewfinder and 40% occurs outside this circle. Both the shutter speed and aperture setting are coupled to a single needle in the meter. In addition to the meter readout, the shutter speeds are visible in the viewfinder display The Nikkormat FT3 is one of the legendary "workhorse" cameras, and will likely still be working perfectly 50 years from now. Hopefully there will still be film that it can use at that future time, eh?Read full review
I have been engaged in photography as a hobby and as a collector of cameras for over forty years. The Nikkormat FT3 is one of my all time favorite single lens reflex film cameras. It is everthing that I wanted in a camera: simplicity of operation, very reliable and almost overbuilt sturdy body, and a highly accurate and easy to read built in exposure meter. Coupled with any of the excellent Nikon Nikkor lenses, this camera becomes an awesome, pleasure to use, photographic instrument designed for the advanced amateur and professional alike. My preference for cameras, both single lens reflexes and rangefinders has been for those with a mechanical shutter not requiring any batteries for full operation of the camera except for the exposure meter. I would highly recommend this camera to students of photography who truly need to learn the relationships between f stops, shutter speed, and depth of field. And to those looking for a highly reliable camera that accepts all of the excellent Nikon Nikkor lenses. I prefer the Nikkormat FT3 over the FT2 and the FTN because of its auto indexing feature.Read full review

Exquisite construction and design, and the smoothest shutter release I have ever experienced on an SLR. A delight to use and own.

Bulletproof. Ft-3’s use modern batteries and the meters have survived poor storage for the last twenty years. If you’re into film, this is a great tool. Research some Ai lenses, buy them and get started! There are still bargains to be had.
