Actress Emma Thompson both wrote and stars in this adaptation of Jane Austen's SENSE AND SENSIBILITY--a novel that perceptively examines the social manners and laws of early-19th-century Britain. Set in the English countryside, the film follows the loves and heartaches of sisters Elinor (Thompson) and Marianne Dashwood (Kate Winslet). The two have extremely divergent approaches to life: Elinor represents "sense" and believes in behaving with propriety and thoughtfulness, while Marianne represents "sensibility" and basks in her own emotions. Both women, however, experience confusion when their lovers, seemingly on the verge of proposing marriage, spurn them. For director Ang Lee, the film marks a break from his Father Knows Best trilogy, which examined the problems of the contemporary Taiwanese family. Many people questioned whether an Asian director could handle an English period film. Lee answered those questions with a gorgeous film that both captures the nuances of Austen's novel and proves that Lee is a first-rate director capable of tackling any material. Featuring Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman, among others, the stellar cast inspired Lee to flatteringly exclaim, "Can everyone in England act?"

A true classic movie. A great addition to my collection to watch over and over again.
After going on a Jane Austen binge a few years ago I read everything she had published I fell in love with her novels and have always liked the movies made from her books. This movie is a great example. It arrived in great condition and on time.

Well Worth Watching
Films of this genre are not usually of interest to me. I first found this film as a VHS tape super cheap at a yard sale. Because several of the actors involved were actors I'd enjoyed in other movies, I thought I'd pick it up to check out, not expecting I'd enjoy it all that much. To my surprise, this version of Sense & Sensibility was very nicely done. All the characters were well developed & well acted, and the story was told without a hint of melodrama- good storytelling with solid performances. I enjoyed it enough that I decided I'd add it to my dvd movie collection.Films of this genre are not usually of interest to me. I first found this film as a VHS tape super cheap at a yard sale. SENSE AND SENSIBILTY JANE AUSTIN DVD, MOVIE
Sadly, I missed the second half of the recent (and most wonderful) PBS adaptation of this timeless classic. I was desperate to know how the story ends because I have never read the novel. I turned to my trusted Ebay and was not disappointed. I found and purchased this DVD (a SUPER DEAL) after finding it not available at the video store. The cast and acting is superb! The scenery made me homesick for the UK where I lived and worked more than 17 years. Emma Thompson's script was perfect in detail, costume and story telling. I am sorry I never read Austin because, as with Shakespeare, it is amazing how humans evolve in the world of technology and in some social ways (for good or ill). However, in other important human ways nothing changes thrugh the ages, such as our deep seated human ... This is an extremely literate and entertaining exploration of human emotion. Enjoy!
