Stayed up late to read it. Many interesting characters.
This is one of the few books in recent memory that I actually stayed up late and woke up early to read. The characters are very interesting and the plot threads are varied. I seriously worried when certain characters were near death. The book is a page-turner. The only potential downside of this novel -- which I think is a downside that most long novels with many characters face -- is that I sometimes found myself more attached to one story thread than another. If one character's story was exciting, I wanted to continue reading about THAT character, so I would skip ahead over the stories of other characters to get to the next part with THAT character. I wanted to know what was going to happen! I do not think that it is a flaw with the author's writing because I do this with all long ... I did it with Lord of the Rings when Tolkien shifted between Sam and Frodo's story to Legolas' and Gimli's story, for example. These are the story elements I liked best: -Alchemist characters and fantasy elements twisted around the more realistic plots of the book. A couple of the characters are interested in immortality. It is a darker aspect of the book that I liked to read about. -Power, political strategies, manipulation, etc. One of the characters is the younger sister of the Empress-to-be, but ends up becoming Empress when her sister dies in an accident. The character was not seriously trained to be Empress and it is interesting to read about all the misguided and ambitions things she does to maintain her power. -Social classes. The characters come from different social backgrounds: daughter of a seamstress, an Empress, a scholar, an outcast from a nomadic tribe, a skilled warrior, a healer, etc. You will definitely like at least one character. For sure. -Culture and tradition. Alma Alexander sets this book in a fictional country and she does a good job of developing the country's culture and history. Some of it is based on China, but it clearly is not actually China. -Good wording. The writing itself is very well-crafted. Ignoring everything about plot and story, just reading the phrases and sentences themselves was fun. This is especially important for long novels! Alma Alexander makes it easy to continue reading because it is not a chore. It is enjoyable.

Great Great Book! Perfect blend of reality and fantasy! Constant entertainment throughout the book, awesome characters. At first I was alittle taken aback at how quickly the characters handed out the jin-shei promise, but in the end it was ok.
