About this product

Product Information

This musical performance release features two separate classical concerts. The first was mounted and filmed live at St. Thomas's Church in Leipzig on May 8, 2005. Maestro Herbert Blomstedt conducts the Gewandhaus Orchestra and Morten Schuldt-Jensen serves as the chorus master of the Gewandhaus Chamber Choir, in an interpretation of J.S. Bach's Mass in B Minor, BWV 232; soloists include tenor Christoph Genz and bass Dietrich Henschel. The second performance takes place at Leipzig's Church of St. Nicolai on October 9, 1999; it features an interpretation of several works by J.S. Bach, Felix Mendelssohn and Ludwig van Beethoven by The Gewandhaus Orchestra, again with Herbert Blomstedt conducting. In this set, the Thomaner Chor Leipzig provides vocal support; soloists include vocal soprano Nancy Argenta, violinist Viktoria Mullova and organist Jürgen Wolf.

  • A very good recording of 2 great concerts

I really enjoyed this performance. There is a lot on this disc! A full performance of Bach's b minor mass and a whole other program with among other gems, Beethoven's 5th symphony. My surround system got a proper workout and I felt that I got more than my money's worth. I highly recommend it. Plus the bonus material with an interview of the conductor was very nice. Can't wait to watch it again and again. A treasure. (And I have Karl Richter's version on dvd and have Helmut Rilling's, John Elliot Gardner, and Robert Shaw's recordings to compare it to.) 😉

  • Much Better - and Much More - Than the DVD Release

This Blu-ray title is a huge step up from the DVD I used to own. The image quality was amazing; it had the clarity of a Renaissance painting - the kind where everything is in focus, no matter how far away. Also, it takes another DVD release and adds it fill the disc with nearly three and half hours of material. Yeah - this was areal upgrade on every level.
