A Disappointing Adaptation of a Phenomenal Graphic Novel
I have lately been bulk buying and binge watching DC animated film that I have purchased from JB Hi Fi and about 95% of them are great but unfortunately I got my hopes up about this film. I have read the absolutely outstanding and phenomenonal graphic novel in which it was based but to not be biased I watched this film with the intention of critiquing it as it's own thing without making a comparison. The first 28 minutes of the film are unnecessary as all it is Batman and Batwoman chasing a misogynistic but otherwise generic thug who is in the mob then. They catch the mob thug, Batwoman quits and that is literally the end of that, for good. The real movie begins 28 minutes in and it's actually not too bad but it's too short and really deserved to be a two hour animated epic but instead ... The real movie begins 28 minutes in and it's actually not too bad but it's too short and really deserved to be a two hour animated epic but instead we get what feels like a twenty minute episode of "The Batman" (2004 TV Show) and fifty minutes of an animated version of the graphic novel, "Batman: The Killing Joke". The film also contains many flashbacks to the Joker's origins that we have seen quite a few times before in other DC animated movies but this time it's dug into quite a bit and is probably my favourite part of the film. I actually felt sorry for him before the accident as he was a down on his luck failing comedian who lives in a crumby area of Gotham who is trying to support himself and his pregnant wife. It was sad to see the Joker's life before the accident and how all it takes to reach total madness is one bad day. The film is dark and definitely not for kids as the main plot revolves Batman hunting the Joker who is trying prove a point by showing pictures to Commissioner Gordon of how he sexually assaulted his daughter to make him go crazy. This could have been the best Batman film ever made if they did it right and without the twenty minute subplot that is just there to introduce Batgirl even though it's irrelevant to the rest of the movie. The BluRay looks great in full HD, 1080p. It's 1.78:1 aspect ratio so it's full screen and even though I'm not usually a fan of full screen movies this movie doesn't really have the cinematic feeling to be in widescreen and being in full screen just feels right for an animated film such as this. The film sounds great as well with a 5.1 DTS-HD audiotrack that sounds amazing and is always crystal clear and actually great to listen to on a home theatre system as you hear every punch, smash and shot so clearly you feel like you're there despite the fact the film is animated. The extras are great just like every DC animated film and constrains trailers (which is what I want from every BluRay's special features) as well as a few behind-the-scenes featurettes along with many more goodies. Would I recommend this film, yes if you have seen the othe DC animated films and only for everything after the 28 minute mark. Would I make sure someone watched, no I wouldn't because DC have a lot better animated films out there and if you want to buy a better animated Batman film I suggest you buy "Batman: Under the Red Hood" as it is a much better film as a whole.
