  • This Movie Is An Entertaining, Adult Fairy Tale

This Mexican movie is like a child's fable--only for adults. The wicked mother tells her youngest daughter that she can never marry because it is the tradition of the family that the youngest daughter has to take care of the mother until her death. And guess which daughter like Cinderella falls in love first. Tita, the youngest, is smitten with Pedro, who is also smitten with her. But Mama says no; so to be near Tita, Pedro marries her oldest sister. Tita, so forlorn, concentrates on learning to cook from the master cook of the house, Nacha. Eventually, she is so good that her recipes transform the mood of the family lots of different ways. They can make them sick, lecherous, but mostly in love. Tita eventually gets a boyfriend--Dr. John MD--which complicates the story, but mostly ...

  • amazing story

Normally I wouldn't give a movie such as this a second glance, I'd chalk it up to a 'B' movie and not even rent it. Thank goodness my sister brought it home with her years ago when we shared an apartment in our younger, wilder days. Watching because everyone else was I found myself extremely interested and now in love with this story. Yes the movie is older and simple, some of the acting is lacking and it was low budget I'm sure but the Story the simple story is beautiful and speaks volumes....a classic story of love ... real love being right there but denied for reasons of the world the lovers live in. A very spiritual and deep ending for these two makes this story unique. If yoiu have the chance watch it... I'm so glad I did.

  • Like Water for Chocolate

The subtitles didn't bother me in this passionate tale of forbidden love. Exquisite movie! You can't stop watching....it took off from the beginning and held you close. Tita and Pedro are passionately in love, but the family has an ancient tradition. The youngest girl in the family must remain unmarried to care for her parents. Tita's mother is a woman who is unyielding and stern, so Pedro marries Tita's older sister so he can be near her. In the story, you feel the sexual tension between the two and so for Tita, she takes on the part of the family cook and transforms food into sexual passion for Pedro by using ordinary spices. Her creations bring out the heated desires in everyone. Just watch the range of emotions on their faces while they are eating. The passion is apparent in ...

  • It was dramatic, at least. . .

I guess I was expecting a lot. When I was younger my mother rented this movie and refused to let me watch. I don't know how old I was, but I remember being mad about it. I did get to see some parts because I would sneak into the room and watch until my mom kicked me out. . . And it looked good. However, I watched the movie and I wasn't impressed. It's not like it was awful, but it was hard for me to keep paying attention. I felt really bored with the story and just wanted the main character, Tita, to run away and find a better life for herself, instead of pining over the man who married her sister. It was just frustrating. I kind of liked the food aspect of the movie, but it wasn't enough to carry the film. It just felt like it went on and on with the same conflict, and it was never ...

  • Great movie

. I can relate to the girls mother, I had an adopted mother who was just like her. I saw this movie years ago and cried through out the whole movie. Finally had the courage to see it again and my response was different. I've healed. Thank you
