Written in the 1890s and 1990s, and published at the end of a millenium, these stories - various and yet interconnected - investigate the range of women's aspirations and anxieties in these two periods. Contributions include new stories from Alice Thomas Ellis, Emily Prager, Elizabeth Jolley, Candia McWilliam, Claire Harman, Helen Simpson and Moy McCrory in the 1990s and are interspersed with stories from Edith Wharton, Ella D'Arcy, George Egerton, Ada Leverson, Netta Syrett, Charlotte Mew, Evelyn Sharp and Mrs Murray Hickson in the 1890s. The book is compiled by the author of Misogynies , A Masculine Ending and Don't Leave Me This Way .

Based on the seller's description, I'm disappointed. Despite being advertised as clean and without stains, the used book I received has multiple stains throughout and feels sticky to the touch. Even after cleaning, it remains dirty, which is unpleasant. Additionally, the cover has clearly been creased at some point. Overall, it's acceptable, but it doesn't match the description, making it feel overpriced.
