About this product

Product Information

'Unforgettable . . . a hilarious, poignant and impassioned plea to revolutionise our attitudes to death' Gavin Francis, Guardian From her first day at Westwind Cremation & Burial, twenty-three-year-old Caitlin Doughty threw herself into her curious new profession. Coming face-to-face with the very thing we go to great lengths to avoid thinking about she started to wonder about the lives of those she cremated and the mourning families they left behind, and found herself confounded by people's erratic reactions to death. Exploring our death rituals - and those of other cultures - she pleads the case for healthier attitudes around death and dying. Full of bizarre encounters, gallows humour and vivid characters (both living and very dead), this illuminating account makes this otherwise terrifying subject inviting and fascinating.

I appreciate getting the book, though someone packing the item wasn’t careful and 6 pages had been folded, it’s good to practice to make near more perfect. I appreciate it having arrived, thank you.

I received the book in a paper envelope and unfortunately it was affected by weather becoming wet and damaged. I contacted the seller and explained the circumstances. I was offered two options, 1) return the book for a full refund (seemed wasteful, unable to resell the book, incurs a cost for postage) or 2) receive a partial refund of $5.87 ($25.85 purchase price). I politely declined the offer of an arbitrary partial refund, and suggested that a paper book be posted inside a thin plastic sleeve

Caitlin's first book about her first position at Westwind Cremation & Burial. Coming face to face with the very thing we go to great lengths to avoid thinking about - death. She describes in detail cremation and the families that they left behind. She explores our death rituals and those of other cultures. She pleads the case for healthier attitudes around death and dying. This book is full of bizarre encounters, gallows humor and vivid characters both living and dead. Her illuminating account makes this book of otherwise terrifying subject inviting and fascinating. I could not put this book down from the moment I opened its cover.

  • Smoke Gets In Your Eyes - Caitlin Doughty - EXCELLENT

This book is amazing. Author deals with death in a sensitive and caring way, informing the reader of a more involved, personal way of handing death in a very *real* way. Caitlin Doughty's alternative views on handling death are the future. Delving into how people have dealt with death throughout human history, this HIGHLY educated expert articulates how people have pushed dying and death into the shadows where it has not always been, and how cathartic and healing alternative options can be for the grieving. This book is funny, real, sensitive and was a great read. I binge read it in a night and the next morning! I recommend this to EVERYONE. I will be giving it to my 12yo to read next. EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT!!
