Murder My Sweet is among the best of film noirs. Story taken from Raymond Chandlers book ;Farewell My Lovely was well directed by Edward Dmytryk and made easier to follow than Chandlers book. Chandlers The Big Sleep was another very convoluted story line. Howard Hawks direction on that film left the viewer in the dark and it is said that even Chandler himself didnt know who comitted one of the murders. But Dmytryks job on Murder My Sweet was comendable and made a name for him. Dick Powells starring role as Philip Marlowe led him to a new career also. Prior to this his main strength was Busby Berkely musicals. His transformation into the tough-guy detective seemed very natural and he carries the role very well. Also Claire Trevor comes through with a sterling performance as the Femme-Fatale. She almost steals the film with her role as the temptress who almost draws in the shrewd Marlowe. All the acting is fine. The script-writing was very good. Keeps the story in tact and the viewer get a good dose of witty remarks and laughs in the mean time. It is not a film one can watch casually. There is so much going on that even a small lapse of attention can send you to the rewind button. Thats the convoluted Chandler story. But its well worth the effort to stay with the film as the end of the story has surprises. Unlike some harder noir stories Dmytryk has given it a happier ending than other films, such as his Crossfire; or Hustons ;Asphalt Jungle; . All in all;Murder My Sweet; is an easy and pleasant film to watch, owing to the wonderful performances. It was a box-office success at the time too unlike many other noirs. One of my favorites.Read full review
I have seen this movie many times, I am glad I now have a good copy. Anyone who likes mysteries should enjoy this. Film noir at its best.

The disk was in good shape and the movie was totally engaging. For Raymond Chandler fans, Powell is probably the best film Marlowe. I had long felt James Garner most closely resembled Chandler's shamus and Bogart's Marlowe though unmatched was very much Bogart-Bacall magic. But Powell put a lot more into the original character and the piece had much of the 1930-1940 LA aura about it. It is a good buy worth many viewings.

The back of the case for this dvd states "Near perfect, My Sweet considered one of the quintessential film-noir films". That pretty much says it all. This is one of the best of all time and deserves to be put in the same catagory as such classics as "The Asphalt Jungle, Crossfire, The Naked City, The Big Sleep & The Petrified Forest (not a film-noir but a classic anyway). The dvd contains commentary by film historian/Film-Noir specialest Alain Silver and original theatrical trailer. Picture and sound quality are excellent. This movie should be in any classic film lover's library. Marty C. 12/14/2011
What a pity that such a prime source was abandoned in favor of a director who cared more for his own thoughts than the excellence he was paid to portray. Chandler might have turned over in his grave. Maybe folk just don't care anymore.
