Since I've already reviewed the title film, "Dark Victory," in its VHS format, my aim in providing this critique is to examine the special features on the 2005 DVD version. The DVD special features include: 1. "New Digital Transfer from Restored Picture and Audio Elements" 2. "Commentary by Film Historian James Ursini and CNN Film Critic Paul Clinton" 3. New Featurette 1939: Tough Competition for 'Dark Victory'" 4. The original "Theatrical Trailer." It is frankly fascinating to contrast the digital transfer with the VHS original. Although, being a historical film critiquer, I must admit that I like seeing and hearing the old flaws without video and audio restorations. They add that antique character quality to the film. The running commentaries by Ursini and Clinton are interesting even though I don't necessarily agree with their analyses. To have only men critiquing what is perhaps one of Bette Davis' best performed film that appeals so much to her women following, seems lacking in such women's insights. Men cannot say what women found so magnificent about "Dark Victory." Only women can critique this film from a woman's perspective. Sorry guys, but that's true. Much as some men who like to believe they can and do completely relate to women's experiences, feelings, and their processes, there is no way for them to do as such. Therefore, I long for women film historians to step forward to present their critiques. Then, I ask, would women's critiques be included with updated DVD versions or suppressed? Undoubtedly, 1939 was a historical year in American film making. See my review of the VHS: "The Vintage Year: 1939". The competition for awards for the numerous great performances and great films was the fiercest it's ever been in US film history. Thus, the short examination of why that was so adds an informative feature to this DVD version of "Dark Victory." Enjoy the original theatrical trailer!Read full review
