When I opened the box the horn of the tote was broken and the iron was not flat. I could tell that this this occurred during shipping. The bottom was flat and sqjare with the sides. After some days of contemplation I decided to repair it myself. Works like a charm now. I think if it arrives undamaged, you can definitely say it is good value for the money. For the price can't complain
took a risk buying this item, but as the wood plane was so cheap I felt it warranted the chance. The item came in undamaged packaging less than 24hrs after ordering (great service). Inspection of the plane revealed very poor machining on the frog, with its' adjustment screw being decorative (doesn't do anything), a lever cap that struggles to keep everything under control.... and an iron that certainly isn't ready for anything, let alone a piece of wood. However I am sure that I will be able to get a sharp edge on such (in defence I haven't purchased any wood plane whose iron didn't need attention). Surprisingly the sole of the plane is very flat and won't require much work with the aluminium oxide paper at all. Good paperweight, cr*p plane.
The blade adjusting yoke is of such flimsy construction, the plane is useless. The sole is concave and the frog is so poorly cast, there is a chunk missing. The holes for fixing the frog to the sole are un-machined and the frog advancing screw is at an angle. I spent 3 hours flattening the sole and sharpening the blade before I discovered the blade could not be advanced. I contacted Silverline by e-mail, there seems to be no way to phone them' and they said I should return it for an engineering assessment at my expense. Given the cost of the plane, the postage would be throwing good money after bad so I wont be doing that. I am a chartered mechanical engineer and have been involved in design, construction and maintenance for 40 years, so I can recognise cr*p when I see it. I spent a ... I spent a long time cutting, forging, welding and filing a new yoke from a piece of mild steel bar - it works fine now but needs another two hours on the surface table to get it truly flat. The handle is made for a ladies hand, its too small, smaller than a Stanley No 4. I will be tuning this plane until it works then selling it and buying a Record or Stanley. Unless you are keen on sanding, filing and cursing, I'd save your money and buy a second hand No 7 then spend an hour tuning that.

Size ok, quality lacking.
Tried using this plane and ok for about 5 mins. When I needed to adjust the cutting depth turning the brass thumb nut has no effect. The Alloy fork it moves is too short where it engages with the blade and so does not move the blade. I had to pack it out with tin plate to use it.

For the money - Brilliant
The sole of the plane was near perfect flat when it arrived, in fact, better than some expensive (£200+) planes I have bought. I sharpened the blade to 25 degrees and honed to perfection. Don't expect to use it without sharpening because you will be disappointed. Following a bit of work with a metal file to round the front and rear of the sole plus a bit more tidying as with any new plane I went on the use the plane to flat a 36" woodwork bench top to perfection with ease. For the price it is an amazing piece of kit, don't be put off by the price you can work wonders by correct setup and sharpening. Make sure you smear with wax to prevent rusting if in damp environment. Everything works fine and I would thoroughly recommend this plane, it can only be described as an absolute ...
