The Original Text for Neuro Linguisitic Programming
This is a great book, and not just for those in the mental health professions. Sales people, also, and many others, have benefited from techniques related to NLP, as they can be applied to many aspects of life and interpersonal relationships. The famous self–help guru Anthony Robbins picked up on the usefulness of NLP concepts in self–help and sales training in the early 1980s, and it has become a staple principle for discussion in that arena ever since. This book, which evolved from Bandler’s thesis, is surprisingly accessible for an academic work. Those not involved as professionals in psychology or therapy may want to stop about halfway through the book, as it gets into more of the therapeutic techniques, but the early chapters would be very useful for salespeople and others who are interested in improving their ability to get on with people. There is a second volume of “The Structure of Magic” as well as a perhaps more famous book, “Frogs into Princes” which is really more of a transcript of seminars, and, in my opinion, far less useful and accessible than this one. Why it seems to command higher prices on the used book market is a mystery to me. This is the one to buy.Read full review

Classic treatise on Neuro-Linguistic Programming
Invaluable resource for individuals hoping to understand and incorporate NLP into their clinical practice or for other applications, including business negotiations, legal mediation, etc.. The seller had this listed under occult, and I suppose that the results of NLP can almost seem otherworldly for those who don't know about it. These 2 volumes describe so called meta-models, or the structure of the strategies for accomplishing things that people who are very successful at accomplishing those things, whatever they may be, are using. Virtually any person, if they understand and then employ such a model, can accomplish essentially the same success. I had the paperback versions years ago, but my son thought they were about magic, and lifted them when he went through a want to be a magician phase, and misplaced them. Just saw a first edition of one of the hard covers on Amazon for a thousand bucks... No second printings, so get them while you can. A must for NLP groupie library...Read full review

Primary source for Neuro Linguistic Programming - NLP
These books are a tweaked version of Bandler’s thesis, and they are quite accessible to non-academics as well as mental health professionals. Although they are primarily focused on therapy and techniques used in clinical settings, the same concepts can be used in many personal and professional interpersonal relationships. Many people, in a variety of occupations, will find value here. Managers, salespeople, parents, teachers, and others who are interested in improving their ability to get on with people will be surprised at the techniques they find. If this one turns you on, check out the second volume of “The Structure of Magic” delve deeper into the subject. There is a perhaps more famous book, “Frogs into Princes” which is basically a transcript of a 2-day seminar on NLP by these same authors. It seems to me that it is more rambling and not as clearly laid out as these volumes, so I cannot understand why it is in greater demand and commands higher prices. These books are not usually very expensive. There will be something interesting for almost everyone in them, professional shrink or not!Read full review

I am not a therapist and the book is pretty much geared in their direction. This makes it a bit of a hard read. That having been said it provides a lot of interesting insights into what people really mean as opposed to what they really say. It also confronts you with the assumptions that you are making about the things you hear. Some people will tend to skip over some of the more technical parts and if that is the only way you can read it, you will still be better off than not reading it at all. But I suggest you turn off the TV, push on some Zen music and focus ---- might save your job, your marriage or even your life.
