Making Movies is a wonderful album released by Dire Straights in 1980. This album only has seven tracks but they are seven very good ones. 1) tunnel of love 2) romeo and juliet 3) skateway 4) expresso love 5) hand in hand 6) solid rock 7) les boys At 8:10, "tunnel of love" is a great ballad that satisfies well beyond the standard 3 ½ minute ditty. The song is of typical Dire Straights prose. "romeo and juliet" is quite possibly one of the finest songs ever written. The lyrics are worthy of the Shakespearean reference, although this couple is not the same duo that Sir William wrote of. At 6:01, this is definitely longer than what American radio stations are accustomed to playing and probably the reason it did not become a hit in The States. This was a huge hit in the U.K. and should very well have been everywhere. No compilation of great songs would be complete without the inclusion of “romeo and juliet” by Dire Straights. The song "skateway" should be the title song to this album. The term “making movies” comes from this track. Another wonderful melody with heart-felt lyrics live on this 6:40 track. "expresso love" 5:11, Better than your average ballet. "hand in hand" is 4:48 of beautiful music. This is another love-gone-wrong song with wonderful lyrics and a tune to match. This is the second best track on this very good album and would be the best on most albums. But then, very few albums have a gem like "romeo and juliet" to contend with. "solid rock" is a mild departure from the rest of the album. The tempo picks up a bit and it sounds more radio-ready at 3:27. "les boys" 4:08, is a mildly countryish song that pokes fun at the gay nightclub scene that was taking place in the late 70s and into the 80s. This song has a catchy tune and lyrics and is worth the listen. Overall, this is a great album. I only wish that I had discovered it when it was released, rather than finding it in the new century. This album has truly withstood the test of time and should be recognized a staple in any record collection.Read full review
Mark Knopfler is without a doubt one of the best guitarists of all time. I would certainly recommend this and any music by Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler individually. If you are lucky enough to be a fan of the band, do yourself a huge favor and search for Mr. Knopfler's solo albums and his collaborative albums with great artists like Emmy Lou Harris and Chet Atkins. I enjoy them all and recommend them to anyone. Like some other really great artists, like Pink Floyd, Leon Russell and others, it just seems like they didn't produce enough music to satisfy their fans. Mark Knopfler's unique style and great lyrics added together with the other artists in the Dire Straits Band and his collaborative works will be studied and enjoyed by people for untold generations. This collection of songs and music produced for background in movies is great. Read full review

This is one of the best cd's out by DIre Straits, it still has the melodic and intense musical sound that is great to hear. Yet, they touch on some generic and pop styles with their Skate away song. LOve it and if you like Genesis you will love this cd
Mark Knopfler the former Lead singer of Dire Straits is destined to be a collectors retirement. My opinion. Take it & become rich if you outlive him.
I have always LOVED this cd, and I wanted to own it again, so I did. I think this is the best cd that Dire Straits ever made. I love every song on it. This cd is the epitome of Dire Straits music. I recommend this cd very highly. There are no "cons" to this cd.
This specific recording is very harsh, but I have a very revealing system. It does have good dynamics. Great music -it's just the recording.
