Title: Thousands Cheer. The story concerns aerialist-turned-G.I. Gene Kelly (mopping up the dance floor with a mop for a partner) romancing colonel's daughter Kathryn Grayson. But the real story is the most spectacular camp show in military history, featuring skits and songs with Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, Red Skelton, Lucille Ball, Lena Horne, Eleanor Powell, Jos?.
Gene Kelly played dramatic roles in lots of his shows - "The Time of Your Life" "Pal Joey" "For Me and My Gal" "It's Always Fair Weather" "American In Paris" - and he did in this one too. There were only 2 songs that I liked in this movie - and one of them was by Verdi. Hollywood took Broadway songwriters for movies (Kern, Berlin, Porter, Rodgers & Hart, de Paul) and in Hollywood they wrote their worst tunes. Songwriters who wrote mainly for movies were never good to begin with. Not a singe joke made me laugh. I was bored to death and thought it would never end. And I kept thinking - all these people were making a movie while soldiers were going to war.
