About this product

Product Information

This nine-hour documentary series offers a comprehensive focus on the mode of combat that has a bird’s-eye advantage over both land and sea forces: the modern air squadrons of World War II. Fascinating newsreel footage invites viewers to an up-close-and-personal audience with the aircrafts that were integral to some of the war’s most effective strategies and ultimately led to victory.

  • that 50/50 view-half good, half bad

This 5 disc collection is a mixed bag. There are some movie clips I have never seen, some pictures of airplanes that are not your common, run of the mill pictures. But there are so many things that are going wrong that if you don't know about so many of the planes, you will get half the story right, and half not. A big problem is the "background" music is so loud it drowns out the narrative. The sound volume is very inconsistent. The airplanes being described do not match the pictures in so many instances. For instance, while the narrator is talking about Lagg 3 or Yak airplanes, the pictures are showing Bell P-39 Aircobras obtained in the Lend-Lease program. While describing C-47s, pictures of B-17s are shown. When describing some airplanes flying in 1943, the pictures show airplanes with invasion stripes, which were applied to Allied airplanes for the Normandy invasion, D-Day, which was June 6 1944. But there are a few clips showing rarely seen airplanes in flight. And the there is the method used to keep the dvds in place. That central round gizmo that, if made just slightly larger, would work, but sized as is does NOT keep the dvds secure in the holder. If you are new to learning about many of these airplanes, this is not the item for you since there are so many airplanes not shown while being described. I do not recommend this collection as it is produced. Blaring music that is supposed to be background music, the tempo too often wrong for the scenes shown, the lack of collaboration of picture and narrative, makes it more of a challenge to watch than being enjoyable and informative.
