A straightforward device that delivers what it promises, the Archos 604 Wi-Fi can be packed with useful features, such as video streaming, web surfing, and sound recording. It is about the same size as most smartphones at 5.1 inches by 3.1 inches but slightly thicker at 0.7 inch. At 263g, the Archos 604 Wi-Fi is pretty heavy, but it can feel solid and stable in the hands and can easily slip into a pouch or a purse. The little kickstand pops out at the back so you can watch videos hands-free like you would using regular tablets. The 4.3 inch LCD touch screen displays 480x272 native resolution and has a brightly lit backscreen that can deliver accurate and vibrant colors. The buttons on the right side of the player are secondary controls as the player can be operated using the responsive touch screen. Surfing the web and streaming content on the Archos 604 Wi-Fi can be intuitive and easy. The Wi-Fi can connect seamlessly with any available hot spot. The Opera browser can be fast and support normal browsing navigation. Gaming using the Opera browser is also possible, especially when connected to a high speed connection. Another wireless feature is the File Server, which allows remote playback of network-based files from a desktop computer or laptops off to the device. It syncs with a Windows PC via the Windows Media Player using a proprietary USB cable, allowing you to drag and drop audio, video, and image files from your hard drive to the player. The Archos 604 supports AVI (MPEG-4 ASP) up to 480p at 30fps and protected WMV and WMV. Downloading optional codecs lets you play back MPEG-2, H.264, and VOB files. For audio files, the Archos Wi-Fi plays MP3, WAV, WMA, and protected WMA audio tracks. It reads common photo extensions, such as PNG, BMP, and JPEG, and also has a PDF player for reading PDF documents. The 30GB storage capacity can save over 20 HD movies or more if videos are saved in medium quality. It can save thousands of audio files, which can be ample enough for music enthusiasts. The Archos 604 Wi-Fi turns into a portable DVR when connected to a docking station. It records AVI MPEG-4 ASP video files at 640x480 at 30fps. The DVR compresses audio with ADPCM stereo, but you can record audio separately via analog line-in or capture it via the built-in microphone. It can capture audio in WAV files and can let you use a volume meter to control the level of volume being recorded from any of the sources. The overall sound quality can be good with well-extended highs and punchy bass. Advanced features, such as custom equalizer and bass-boost, can enhance the recorded audio’s sound for better output. The jack for headphones or earphones doubles as an A/V output for connecting the device to a TV, which can let you watch recorded videos on a bigger screen without using any special software. The A/V output can also support 5.1-channel surround sound to take advantage of better speakers or a home theater system. A removable battery can deliver an impressive four hours of video playback, which means you can watch two movies continuously. Archos claims the device lasts about 17 hours of audio, which can let you listen to your favorite music all day without charging the 604 in between. Most of the accessories, such as the docking station and USB adapters, are optional and can be purchased in a computer accessories shop. It does ship with basic accessories, including a USB cable for charging and syncing files to a computer or laptop, earbuds with volume control, a carrying pouch, and an adapter for a docking cradle, which can let you use the Archos 604 Wi-Fi immediately after opening the box.
