Bulgarien 1970. Enttauscht und gedemutigt von den kommunistischen Machthabern, gelingt dem Elektriker Penko Penev mit Frau und Kind, unter dramatischen Umstanden, die Flucht in den Westen. Nach Aufenthalt in einem Fluchtlingslager in Italien, erreicht die Familie Amerika. Dort erfindet Penko einen Roboter und grundet eine eigene Firma. Die bulgarische Staatssicherheit spurt ihn auf, vermittelt ihm einen Kredit mit dem Ziel sich seines Know-Hows zu bemachtigen. Nach Fall des Eisernen Vorhangs nutzen kriminelle bulgarische Vereinigungen den Kapitalmangel seiner Firma um sich Anteile anzueignen und zur Geldwasche und zum Drogen-Trafiks zu missbrauchen. Penko wird reich und leichtsinnig. Bei einem Besuch in seiner Heimat lernt Penko eine schoene, junge Frau kennen, die er aus den Fangen eines oertlichen Gangsters befreit und sich in sie verliebt. In seinem Dorf baut er eine Villa und eine Kirche, erwirbt ein Schnellboot und zieht so allmahlich den Neid der Bewohner auf sich, was zu seinem Untergang fuhrt.
