Durable, reliable, simple and effective.
I've had an 8 ohm version forever and found while it did what it's supposed to, my 50 watt Marshall sounded dull and devoid of top end at extreme attenuation settings. I spent $350 on a used THD Hotplate and experienced the same deficits and returned it. It was a revelation when I went back to this L-pad and found with lower wattage speakers my amp sounded dramatically better. This is why I bought the 16 ohm version recently. Long story short: Lower wattage speakers (switched to a couple of 15 watt Goodmans Alnico and 20 watt Rola Alnico in two different cabs) and playing with the tone controls of your amplifier to emphasize the highs may be necessary, but with these two things you can devise a simple attenuator using these L-pads for a fraction of the price of some of these other ... I am hearing my AC30 and JTM45 as entirely new and splendid sounding amplifiers with these 100 watt L-pads-even at extreme attenuation settings. As a final word per reliability: I encased these L-pads in vented small aluminum project boxes with the L-pad covers removed. They get warm (sometimes really warm) but even after extended use I've never had them smoke or smell of burning as some elsewhere have reported.

L-Pad. Crank your amp anywhere
Really simple gadget. If you have a low gain amp at the front end this L-pad allows you to drive the output valves producing more saturation at a lower, neighbour and wife friendly volume. I’m using a 50w Marshall and feels like I’m hearing it for the first time. Highly recommended if you don’t mind a bit of soldering.
