Nice film shame about the song
It is a decent rendition of the book but most of what is good about this is down to the book and not the film itself. The songs let it down. If you have a skip forward ability on your player then be prepared to use it. With a little work, it is a decent film. There are no special effects. Expect more people in costume that animated talking animals but Gene Wilder is the one character that gets through this without embarrassing himself and is always a joy to watch. I recommend you get this film and the book and hope someone will make a better version of it one day because until that day it is all fans of the story have really got. There is the netflick version which is a retelling of the story in flashback by one of the central characters when he is old. They have written their ... A very difficult story to translate into a film!
Firstly, let me state that I do own a copy of this film on DVD and love it very much - but then again, I was brought up on the story as a child. If you have never read (or been read) Antoine de Saint Exupéry, you are probably going to struggle initially with this film though; not because it is poorly acted by either Gene Wilder or Bob Fosse; nor by the, now long forgotten, child actor Steven Warner - who all provide superb character performances (by the way); Nor is it poorly directed or shot! Its just that some stories are very hard to translate into film - and this is one of those. Though based on a children's story, The Little Prince is both profound as well as being idealistic in it's remarks on life in general - from the point of view of a child. The film is told from the point of view of an airman marooned in the desert who is stranded in his damaged aircraft, and the encounter he has there with a mysterious child 'a Little Prince' who appears to him. at one point in the story the Prince asks the narrator for a drawing of a sheep; but, not knowing how to draw a sheep he draws only what he knows - a boa with an elephant in its stomach. Previously we learn that as a child the narrator's artistic efforts were ridiculed by those around him who could see no further than their limited imaginations would allow - and could only make out the shape of a 'hat?'. The Prince demonstrates his child's perception allows him to see beyond the obvious and imagine what the artist truly wanted to show. After several failed attempts to draw a successful sheep for the boy, The narrator finally realises his imaginative potential and draws a box which he explains has the sheep inside. The Prince, who can easily see the sheep inside the box just as well as he can see the elephant in the boa, says "That's perfect". Whether the Little Prince is real or just a figment of the airman's imagination is not important and never really settled; but it is little gems like this that are what the story is about. It's a touching journey that recaptures something of the innocence of childhood mixed with the regrets of later life. The film is very stylized and as a result quite dated by modern standards, but I doubt younger audiences will be distracted by these technical points, and as the story suggests, probably see beyond what lies in front of their eyes. If adults can try to do the same then they may have succeeded in achieving what the story set out to do in the first place; and perhaps the dated cinematography acts as a doorway, in this case, that may allow adults with the right frame of mind to traverse during the film version of this story and recapture a little of their own childhood along the way too?
