I wish I could say this was a great Hugh Grant Movie, but I would be lying. Sure he plays a great part here, and it is interesting that Kirsten Scott Thomas is along as his wife Fiona. Now I understand why she was in love with him in Four Weddings and a Funeral in which she also played Fiona :-), but Polanski created a film for Peter Coyote and Emmanuelle Seigner (The Ninth Gate). Cyote is just about the most sleazy person you can imagine as he goes about using and abusing Seigner until she is reduced to nothing, She is willing to do anything to remain with him. Why? That is a good question and what I see as the whole point here. Why remain in a relationship where there was never any love in the first place and there is clearly no love now? Wht degrade yourself to "do anything" to stay together? The degradation continues when they meet Grant and Thomas on a cruise and Grant is panting to get a chance with Seigner. Who wouldn't. But there is a very funny twist at the end before tragedy strikes. Makes you really look at relationships in a new light.Read full review
I saw the movie when it came out in the early 1990's. I always liked Polanski's work. He's one of the more creative directors around. This movie leaves you in a trance. Is it love? Is it hate? Do couples really have to indulge in these sex acts in order to fulfill and seal their relationship? I don't know the answer, but the movie gives quite a direct visual of Polanski's world. Remember, he was found guilty of having sex with a very young girl, the daughter of a woman he was having an affair with, ibn the 1970's, and fled from justice in the USA to France. Regardless of Polanski's ideas of what is right & wrong, the actors give quite a performancde. First and formost is Peter Coyote's performance. He's never been better. Hugh Grant gives a nice one as well, playing the English gentleman, obssesed with Coyote's wife, while on a cruise with his own wife. The ladies in question give a lesser performance. One has to remember that the femme fatal is in real life Polanski's wife. A sexy, if somewhat distance character. All in all, a very good & different movie, directed to the hilt by a great director, the one and only Roman Polanski, in self imposed exile in France. Get it, watch it, be thrilled. Youi'll get your mony's worth.Read full review
