When we were looking for a keyboard we had 2 requirements: 1) must have a simple one-button piano button for guests to easily use the piano 2) must have XLRs on the piano Well... when you fit the bill... OK so why XLRs on the piano? what does that mean? well it means I don't have to maintain 4 cables, and 2 DI boxes just for one keyboard. I have 2 cables and thats it. Better cable management, that's the first HUGE difference. We love the fact that it uses Roland's dual stage damper pedal, we are a big fan of the feel of the weighted keys, and personally the piano has a robust sound, and I enjoy that I can mimic whether the grand is open, semi-open, or closed. The sound bank is not huge, but this is a stage piano, not a synth. You can mix 4 instruments on a split or 2 instruments on the whole keyboard which is cool also when wanting piano and a warm-pad or piano and strings. We have not found a need to use the expansion section, and have never used its USB section as a MIDI controller. It does what is says it does and reliably. Over 2 and half years of use and never a failure, never a glitch or a hickup. The blue LCD is pretty and had never lost a pixel nor have we had connection issues with the onboard 1/4th" connections or the XLR connections. It provides an ample amount of signal, and in fact my only complaint is that the XLR level out is NOT line out, but more like a POST FADER or reliant on the keyboard's main volume level. We have to ask the player not to raise the volume over the second volume notch for this reason, and that is the only drawback of the the entire board (if you want to call that a problem). I am extremely pleased with the Roland RD-700 keyboard I purchased. I am a singer and needed a good keyboard to take out on jobs. The individual that I purchased it from was outstanding in his follow-up. He sent several e-mails to make sure I had received the unit and that it was in good condition. He did a great job packing it. He was up front in telling me before I purchased that one of the keys stuck. I have been able to repair that key. The keyboard does exactly what I wanted....good piano sound and good key feel, plus several extra features. I can't say that there is anything that I disliked about the unit or the dealings.
This is an older model of Roland Digital Stage Piano. I prefer its layout and sound options as a classical musician. Harp (#313), for example, is easily accessible. Roland changed the codes, access by dial instead of buttons, preset instrument combinations and many other things on the newer NX model. I am grateful to find an older keyboard in excellent condition. I already own an RD-700 and wanted an additional instrument for performance without having to take down my practice instrument at home. Also, whenever mine needs repair, I am not left without an instrument to play.
If you like pianos and rhodes sounds you'll really like the Roland RD-700GX. I've had several different Roland keyboards and this is by far my favorite. It is easy to use and has rich, powerful and realistic sounds.
There's quite a few newer digital pianos to choose from with newer technology, but the RD 700NX is truly a well built and proven product and destined to be a classic.
