I purchased my Pioneer DV-59AVi primarily as a high performance universal-format audio source. So my review will focus on its profound audio capabilities. In my system ~ Elite VSX-56TXi receiver ~ Anthem MCA 20 amp ~ Paradigm Reference Studio 20's (L-R-LS-RS) ~ Paradigm CC190 (Center) and Paradigm Servo 15 sub ~ the Elite DV-59AVi possesses an dynamic, effortless, liquid, finely textured and airy presentation. With extended, non-fatiguing highs. Deep, powerful, tuneful bass (the best ever in my system). Incredible detail resolution that’s supremely musical, not analytical in nature. Revealing previously hidden nuance in all my music. A tall, deep and wide stage. Shockingly wide in fact! On good two-channel material, sounds can appear to originate from behind you. The '59 is a pace, rhythm and timing champ. Making it impossible not to foot tap or bob your head. Red-Book CD's and hi-rez sources (SACD & DVD-Audio), simply flow effortlessly and organically from the '59 in the way a fine vinyl set-up can do. The '59 goes toe-2-toe with gear costing thousands more. Even gear many times its price! A big factor in this performance is the i.LINK interface. The holy-grail of digital~audio connections. i.LINK is Sony's trademarked name for the iEEE1394 interface. a.k.a. Firewire. If your fortunate enough to own one of the outstanding i.LINK equipped Pioneer Elite Receivers (select gear from Sony, Denon, Yamaha, Integra and the "costs as much as my first home" gear from Esoteric, are i.LINK equipped as well), you're in the position to reap the benefits of i.LINK'd digital audio. THE most advanced, highest-fidelity, most user friendly digital~audio interface available. Period! The i.LINK interface is a robust, jitter-free (not simply low jitter), high speed, bit-4-bit, single-cable solution for the transmission of ALL digital audio formats. Two-ch and multi-ch SACD and DVD-Audio data included. This from a single, elegant, cheap cable. i.LINK is heaven sent for those of us enduring (not me anymore) the expensive, physically absurd, sonically handicapped and intellectually insulting multiple RCA analog connections SACD and DVD-Audio mandated until i.LINK broke the door down. Expensive mess of cables aside, the real issue for me was the mandatory digital to analog conversion of hi-rez data in player. And the resulting multiple, oh-soo fragile, difficult to manage and preserve low level analog signals. This was, and still is, far from a technically or sonically sound solution for the signal transfer of 01 based audio. Most agree it was used primarily as a copy protection, content management scheme. Multiple analog cables to connect my hi-rez digital source?!. Sounds absurd doesn’t it! But the i.LINK interface with its sonic, ergonomic and economic benefits have managed to remain largely unknown. I strongly feel that if Firewire were utilized for SACD & DVD-Audio at launch, these wonderful formats would not find themselves relegated to the fringe "audiophile" market. But enough of my rant. The DV-59AVi is an outstanding digital audio source. And when using i.LINK, a somewhat unique and rare component. It's presentation of music has me falling in love with music (not just the gear) all over again. Tears and goose bumps are now a regular partner during my music listening sessions. And I'm buying music again. Eager to hear old favorites and discover new ones. ~ peace, JRead full review
This is a fantastic DVD/SACD player, the tray is as quite and smooth as any, the picture quality is still good even if it is outdated for today's technology. Some tv's have upscaling technology built in, so this player can deliver great video. My main use for it is 2 channel audio, the sound is warm and very detailed, with good imaging and separation of instruments. Got a great deal on Ebay and couldn't be happier !!

I am using this as a CD/SACD player, so image quality is not a factor in my evaluation.

Audio is skipping on DVD and CD's. Looks like it needs a repair or cleaning.

It's a great DVD/CD/SACD/DVD-A player. I just love the facilities of playng both SACD and DVD-A in just one player. Most only will play one or another source. Besides this it is complete and well built like all Elite by Pioneer!
