A young Maori girl is born healthy and her twin brother and mother die during childbirth. The little girl is raised by her grandparents as her father goes away to the U.S., to attempt to immerse himself into his artwork. The movie then jumps to the little 10 year old girl Pikaea who is very close to her Grandfather, as she finds her interests in being the next chief, but in this Maori culture men are the dominant gender, women are unable to be leaders or anything other than submissive. Pikaeae continues to have very strong desires to lead her people, and her namesake Pika seems to empower her so. This film takes in some of the beauty of New Zealand, along with telling the story of Pika What follows is the tale of a culture being lost to time and forgotten traditions. Grandpa must choose the next boy-king from a group of clumsy, immature adolescent boys, with a girl whose better at everything she shouldn't. Is there time to save the Ancient ways of the Whale rider people? Who is to be the next Chief? Will Pikaia ruin Grandfather's attempt's to find the next chief? Will the Maori Gods smile upon his decision? This movie is fun, family-oriented, and poignant.Read full review
Love this movie and the disc works great from beginning to end including using all the features. My family watches it w/ the Spanish subtitles so everyone can enjoy it. No stalls or skips when playing. Clean from beginning to end.

I first saw this movie in college for a Lit and Film course three years ago, and it's the only one that stuck with me. I loved the book, and I thought the film was a very faithful interpretation. Having also spent some time in New Zealand and seeing the Maori culture firsthand, there was a nostalgic quality there as well. I wanted to beef up my DVD collection with some thoughtful works, rather than my normal "shoot 'em up" and "blow stuff up" blockbuster flicks, but not anything snooze worthy. It's an uplifting film, despite some tear-jerker moments. Next on my list is "The World's Fastest Indian," which is also a great representation of New Zealand's optimism and persevering attitude.
A beautiful story for adults and children alike. The story is a touching web of family values , traditions and dreams. The main character gives you hope and earnest pathos and draws you in. The whale is the underlining theme as it ties the culture and heritage together with modern drama. a must see. visually stunning, a small slice of New Zealand, and the Maori people. You might laugh a little, and perhaps shed a tear.

I lived in Australia for 8 years, during which time i visited the Northern and Southern Islands of New Zealand...this film is about the indigenous peoples of New Zealand, or the Maori. The actors are Maori, and the film is excellent as it unravels the various beliefs of the Maori people through the eyes of a very young Maori girl. It is a great film!
