Reviews
Taken as a whole, the Aubrey-Maturin novels are by a long shot the best things of their kind...they are uniquely excellent., I prefer the Aubrey-Maturin series to all others, even Holmes-Watson. Every book is packed to absolute straining with erudition, wit, history, and thunderous action., If Jane Austen had written rousing sea yarns, she would have produced something very close to the prose of Patrick O'Brian., [The Series Shows] a Joy in Language That Jumps from Every Page...You're in for a Wonderful Voyage., One does not get many pages into the Aubrey-Maturin sequence before falling under the spell of O'Brian's prose, which is...elegantly paced, quietly witty., There are two types of people in the world: Patrick O'Brian fans, and people who haven't read him yet., My hero is Patrick O'Brian...I read all of his books many, many times. I've read them so many times I can't read them anymore because eventually you know the whole book by heart., Certain authors we read because they enlarge us, because they offer experience, wisdom, beauty of language, a sense of fate and the only defense, a sense of humor...To compare Patrick O'Brian with 'writers of sea stories' is to compare Proust to the ?Orchard Fancier's Quarterly'. O'Brian is literature. I am one of your surly pragmatical polyglot landlubbers, and I read him and reread him with awe and gratitude. His Aubrey-Maturin volumes are in effect one great book, and if I could keep only a half a dozen contemporary writers, O'Brian would be one of them.

    Let's take a voyage

From the first page this story is great, meeting Jack Aubrey & Stephen Maturin and the voyage they embark on the Sophie draws you in, I just started reading it and I am enjoying it, if you have never read Patrick O'Brian's novels, do so, you won't be disappointed.

  • A Disappointing Sea Story

I began this book prepared to like it, I really did. Actually, I was pre-reading it to see if it was suitable for my son. It is not. First, let me say that this book is not for children. Certain topics of a sexual nature are routinely mentioned, indirectly. All of that action takes place off-stage or implicitly. At the start, I was all for Captain Aubrey. I wanted to like him. After all, he is the hero of twenty more sequels. I tried to like him. I just couldn't. He is an obtuse, vain, vulgar, amoral jerk. His only real and true skill is in seamanship and the classical violin. The author uses the immersion method to introduce his audience to the terms and jargon of early nineteenth-century navy seamanship. Nothing much is explained to us landlubbers, which makes following the ...

  • Entire series

Some might not like these because they are so real. The main characters are just way short of perfect. That is in great part what makes the series they must work through their own personal weaknesses, and things completely outside of their control often happen and sometimes it is against them and other times it is for their good (a lot like real life). The frienship of the captain and doctor is very real as neither of them quite understands the other. Like a real friendship they grow close and apart sometimes at the same time. Enjoy them next to the fireplace with a thunderstorm outside.

  • Excellent book the writing is superb very colorful And Timely.
