DAMPER COIL BINDS WHEN SPRING IS LOCATED OFF OF THE INSIDE DIAMETER OF SPRING
The typical, modern performance way to positively locate the TOP side of valve springs from excessive lateral movement is to use a retainer that has a step machined into it that is slightly smaller than the inside diameter of the valve spring. This step essentially goes into the ID of the spring, and limits its dancing around against the retainer. The step I had on my very commonly used chromoly retainer makes the flat wire inner damper bind way too early. This particular spring is engineered to dance and flop around, side load and chew OR be located off of the outside.
