The third novel of the Richard Bolitho series by Alexander Kent
This is a series of novels about the life of a fictitious naval hero of the late 17th - early 18th century, Richard Bolitho. I have read most of the novels, not always in the right order. This one, the third novel, is about his early life in the navy as a third lieutenant learning his craft. The author's love of the sea and the navy is very apparent and the historical aspects of the British navy in those days is interesting and educational. However, it is the emotional and physical traumas that Richard himself goes through in battle after battle, first as a young midshipman through to his final elevated position, that holds the reader spellbound, combined with the story of Richard's abiding love affair with Catherine and the brief times they are able to spend together as wars ... I'm sure there are criticisms to be made but I am a simple reader of books and I have loved Alexander Kent's novels ever since I read my first Bolitho novel. Anyone that loves to read about the sea and history, with some romance intertwined, will enjoy these books. Each novel is a story in itself but you will find that as you read through them, you will start wanting to know the full story so end up searching for the whole series. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. I have read my set of novels over and over again!
