Cole Porter composed his own musical scores and wrote his own original lyrics. And oft times hilarious lyrics they were! "Anything Goes" is Porter doing Porter par excellance. Add to the musical score, this original cast from the Alvin Theatre (on Broadway), first performed on November 21st, 1934! Of course, this is not a 1934 recording. But it is the original score just as it was first performed, with the original orchestrations conducted by John McGlinn. The lead, Reno Sweeney is played by Kim Criswell; Billy Crocker by Chris Groenendaall; Hope Harcourt by Frederica Von Stade & Moonface Martin by Jack Gilford. This CD was recorded in Wembley, England, at CTS Studios, in 1988. The following 74 minutes on 22 tracks are Cole Porter's: 1) Overture 2) I Get a Kick Out of You 3) Bon Voyage 4) All Through the Night 5) There'll Always Be a Lady Fair 6) Where Are the Men? 7) You're the Top 8) You're the Top (encore) 9) There'll Always Be a Lady Fair (reprise) 10) Anything Goes 11) Finale-Act One 12) Entr'acte 13) Public Enemy Number One 14) What a Joy to Be Young 15) Blow, Gabriel Blow 16) Be Like the Bluebird 17) Buddie, Beware 18) The Gypsy in Me 19) Finale Ultimo 20) There's No Cure Like Travel 21) Kate the Great 22) Waltz Down the Aisle Owning this CD is like being in synch with moments in musical history~Read full review

I've had the cassette recording of this cast album for 20 years and when it finally died a short while ago I was thrilled to find the CD available. I didn't know about the book that came with it until seeing my sisters's CD recently. But I digress. There's-reason this show is revived about every decade. It's brilliantly funny, the songs are perfect, it's uplifting and smart. The vocal performances are exciting and the album is slimy a smash. I recommend this recording of Anything Goes with the utmost enthusiasm.
