Long Spoon Lane by Anne Perry
If you haven't read any books by Anne Perry and you like mysteries, she only gets better as she goes. I recommend reading them in order since her characters are the same in this series, Inspector Pitt. Set in the Victorian Era of London, Inspector Pitt and his wife Charlotte (who often meddles in his cases along with her sister Emily and her Great Aunt Vespasia) are trying to solve yet another murder. If you love to hear about the history of an era along with the solving of a mystery you will love these books. The gowns, parties, and beauty of this era, along with the poverty and struggle of the poor make for informational reading. The inspector, his wife, family and associates are more down to earth and their insights into the times make you see that not all is lost. The mysteries ... If you haven't read any books by Anne Perry and you like mysteries, she only gets better as she goes. They are not light, but deep into the issues of the time. I find it hard to put them down and have read the whole series. This is the last one until April and I have just recently bought her series with an Inspector names Monk. I am hoping I like these as much. Anne Perry also has a World War I series with 4 or 5 books as well. I haven't read these. These books are all readily available on ebay. You can go to Anne Perry on line and get a list of her books so you know the order you need. I give them a high recommendation and I read a lot.
