"Compelling, informative, and ultimately touching. This is a first-class book; Ruffian deserves no less." The Seattle Times "A COLORFUL STORY . . . Ruffian was nothing if not a heartbreaker. Her story, dramatically recounted by Jane Schwartz, epitomizes both the adrenaline-pumping glory and gut-wrenching ruthlessness inherent in the sport of horse racing." The Washington Post Book World "[AN] EXCEPTIONALLY FINE BOOK . . . The world of racingthe people, the smells, politics, emotionis what the writer wants to show us. And show us she does, brilliantly." Cosmopolitan "Jane Schwartz has written, with considerable grace and evident love, a superb, painstakingly researched portrait of this most remarkable of thoroughbred fillies." Synopsis
During two short seasons at the track, Ruffian was hailed as the greatest thoroughbred filly of all time. Unbeaten in her first ten starts, she shattered one record after another, dazzling crowds with both her beauty and her brilliant speed. Then tragedy struck on the afternoon of July 6, 1975. Ruffian broke down-on the lead-in the middle of a match race at Belmont Park. Later that night she had to be destroyed. Ruffian- Burning from the Start is the story of this exceptional filly, a horse so dominating, so powerful, that writer Walter Farley once suggested she was more like the fictional legend, the Black Stallion, than any colt he had ever seen. Beginning with her earliest days in Kentucky, the book follows Ruffian at every stage of her career and through the agony of her final hours- venturing behind the scenes of the racing world and exploring the politics and personalities that came together to shape this extraordinary filly's fate., During two short seasons at the track, Ruffian was hailed as the greatest thoroughbred filly of all time. Great book in interesting order of page

This paperback book was in very good condition with only a slight fold in one corner. The binding was good and no discolored pages. The only complaint I have ( but it didn't affect the wonderful story of Ruffian) was that the body of the book was put in upside down and backwards! So, when you held the book with the cover of the book facing you and you opened the book to read it, you see the last pages of the book and all the pages are upside down!! So, in order to read the book from page one you have to turn the book over and then flip it around as the pages are also upside down! j Shipping was very fast!!i

  • Simply The Best Book Ever Written About A Horse!

Schwartz manages to make the reader feel they have returned to the early 1970's and are living in the thick of the three year drama that was the life of the most beloved race horse of all time! From her start as an oversized filly to her races where she was labeled a "freak" to the tragic day in Belmont, the reader rides right along with the one and only magical Ruffian! Schwartz's book is not only the best of the books written about Ruffian, but is simply the best book ever witten about any equine!

  • Great Read

I was a young girl with the Match Race between Ruffian and Foolish Pleasure took place and I remember Ruffian's heartbreaking breakdown. When we went to bed that night, we thought Ruffian would be okay and I was extremely upset when I woke the next morning to find out she'd had to be destroyed. My great-grandfather comforted me and explained why. It was bittersweet to read about this majestic horse, her stunning but short career as an undefeated filly and the memories of her trainer, grooms, jockeys and owners. Like Barbaro, she was a promising and well-loved horse.
