The Onion Field was a title stuck in the back of my mind that somehow cropped up now and then. On a memory jog, I found/purchased and watched this diamond in the rough. This must have been the version that was allowed in more mature thinking areas of the country. It probably would not get past a hard-R rating in it's present state. The highly provocative visuals and implications this movie offers are only today being presented to a much more adult minded audience. Looking back at James Woods in one of his early roles is an enlightening experience in itself. Clearly his ability to convincingly portray socially and politically controversial characters is his art form and not just a well honed skill. The movie struggles in many areas of presentation but Woods saves the moment and brings the viewer back to the reality of the subject matter. Of all the presentations of L.A. local government blunders, comic and otherwise, this is the one that hopefully will never be rivaled. Perhaps that is why there probably will never be a 'remake'.Read full review
I think this is an ok movie, actor played his role well, justice had not been serve right, justice is very slow. Overall movie is good to give us an idea of what's happening at that time in our justice system. The good thing is that the main character was able to cope up with the situation and handled it the best he can to continue his life in a peaceful way.
Enjoyed this classic picture with some big stars just starting out. DVD was in excellent condition.

The true story of how two men killed a policeman in California in the early-1960s, and what happened afterwards. Starts off as a crime drama and ends as legal/courtroom drama. Once the murder occurs, however, that's when things get interesting. The legal side, especially, is quite eye-opening and demonstrates how easily the US judicial system can be manipulated and exploited by criminals. James Woods does the performance of a lifetime as the prisoner/lawyer.
