Great CD/DVD set if you are obsessed with the Grateful Dead and their once in a lifetime appearance at the Great Pyramids in Egypt. However, the shows are subpar and this DVD proves it. While Keith was in a heroin induced stuper on stage, it is well documented that all the players were in one state or another of mind altering and drug induced senses. Jerry was also into heroin at the time but was fearful of smuggling it on the road to Egypt so was nipping on pain killing pills. The music reflects this as all the playing is ragged and downright horrible. All this is well documeted in the several biographies and first hand accounts of of band members and managers of the time of these adventurous set of shows. But this set only if you are curious to see for your self what went on and only immagine what it would have been like to be there. Otherwise pass on this title.Read full review
I have a lot of Grateful Dead in different formats. (I am in my mid-fifties ... figure it out.) This is pretty good overall, as I spent about half of what this costs retail at their site. Problem is, it's not one complete show, and that's why I waited to buy someone's used set. The analog camera shots are often not clear, seem out-of-focus, and IMHO, the editing is lousy, but I guess it was what the Dead could get (or wanted) in the mid-seventies. The sound is fine. Not one of my favorites.
Great cds. I liked it much more than I thought I would as it had a lot of negative reviews. I was holding out for the Road Trips shows, but found this one at an affordable price. The Great Pyramids! What a blast it must have been. Haven't watched the dvd yet.I like most everything from 1976 and 1978, sandwiched around the superlative 1977 year. I definitely recommend this one.
This concert recording is good, but not excellent. I think it should have been released earlier...waiting 30 years to release it seems odd. Regardless of all other considerations, this was a truly historic concert for the Dead. I have enjoyed listening to it immensely.
This is a great cd box set. Good sound, good songs, one of a kind venue. The only thing that could make this better is if there were more tracks from the shows and if the set lists were full in order. Still an outstanding set and I would recommend it for anyone's Dead collection. DVD has amazing footage of the band and the surrounding pyramids the sphinx. The box folds open to reveal a 3-d scene of the pyramids and sphinx. Overall Its great!!!
