Oily fix 4 V-Twin Harley
I purchased the spring as my oil pressure was very low even at higher RPM and the pump had been operating on the 1340cc EVO engine for 180,000 + kilometres. being exposed to heat for all those years & miles must take its toll. Anyway this new spring was quire a bit longer when I compared it to the one I removed. I only use Amsoil 20W-50 in my mid 80's model FLHT/C. After fitting this spring, my oil pressure rose by 10 PSI at 2,500 RPM and I cant explain why, but the oil light doesn't bounce on & off at idle any more on hot days (45C to 53C where I live in Australia). The pressure relief spring does not affect oil pressure at idle, so I cant explain that except to think maybe some oil was previously escaping under the bevelled plunger valve and the extra spring tension is holding it closed ... The pressure relief spring does not affect oil pressure at idle, so I cant explain that except to think maybe some oil was previously escaping under the bevelled plunger valve and the extra spring tension is holding it closed more firmly. This is a standard spring and will keep the oil pressure from exceeding the designed pressure however, if the spring is weak, the higher pressures can not be reached as the plunger is pushed off its seat before the maximum is reached. A word of warning, all these old EVOs run at low pressures, so even if your gauge is reading 0 and the light bulb is working but OFF, you're good to go. These engines need oil flow, so pressure really not a thing. If you pull the dipstick and see oil pumping back into the tank, you're good. My gauge was fluctuating between 0 and 5 PSI at 2,500 RPM before spring replacement. It now reads 10 to 15 PSI at the same RPM. As a mechanical & electrical engineer, I'm very happy with the improvement. Live to ride and keep your knees to the breeze.
