Two great films caught on cheap DVD
El Ultimo Cuple (1957) and La Violetera (1958) are probably the biggest box-office successes of Spanish language cinematography. They both star the magnificent Sarita Montiel at the peak of her beauty and talents. She is the archetype movie queen whose sole presence commands your attention from beginning to end. The films themselves are standard melodramas which have been brilliantly produced and directed and they both take place during “la belle epoque” consequently they are colorful and nostalgic. But the main dish is Miss Montiel singing lots of turn of the century tunes that go from nutty and sexy to romantic and tragic. Every time she opens her voluptuous mouth to sing it’s pure magic. The bad part is that neither film was restored or digitally mastered for the DVD. So the ... El Ultimo Cuple (1957) and La Violetera (1958) are probably the biggest box-office successes of Spanish language cinematography. The sound also needs improvement. Since these films were originally shot in 70mm, the manufacturer should have provided the letterbox view instead of the full screen but over all, and lacking any other options, the quality is OK. Maybe in the future some video firm will offer these classics totally restored to their originally brilliance and it will be nice if they included English subtitles too. Meanwhile this DVD will have to do and it does come in an attractive case with nice art work and a reasonable price tag.

Lost its magic!
Trite and contrived. I first saw this when it was released and I was a teenager. It does not hold magic like “Gone with the Wind” (much older). The lack of subtitles made it tough to share with others.
