This autobiography of American's greatest civilian hero of World War II should be read by every school child in America. People only know of men such as Oscar Schindler's ability to rescue many Jews during the war. However, Varian Fry, the author of this brilliant biography, was given an assignment to rescue two hundred of Europe's greatest and most talented citizens. Instead, he set up a covert operation in Marseilles, and eventually rescued more than 2500 people, most of whom came to the United States. Fry's courage saved individuals such as Marc Chagall, Hannah Ehrendt, and Gustave Mahler, to name but a few. I was enthralled with a story of courage by a man who could have easily sat back and enjoyed a life of peace and safety. This book is the sort of text that one can't put down until the end. If I had to choose one hero to admire above all others, it would certainly be the author of this wonderful book. Marlene KlotzRead full review
Satisfies my need for knowledge and education to learn that Varian Fry, an American expate applied his skills in aiding in the escape of citizens from Occupied countries in WWII to America.
