Bruce Robinson's semi-autobiographical account of his early years as an actor has become a cult hit of massive proportions, inspiring countless numbers of young men and women to quote stars Paul McGann and Richard E. Grant and their booze-soaked dialogue. The story follows these two unemployed actors in 1969 London, as they take a holiday in the country. Trapped inside a dank, empty cabin with each other, an endless downpour of heavy rain battering their roof, the two men form a complicated bond fuelled by booze, disaster, and nihilism. Though not much happens in terms of plot, WITHNAIL AND I is one of the most subtly hilarious films to come out of 1980s.

    Withnail and I special edition

    I have loved every second of Withnail and I since I first watched it at 17. Much of the scenarios which occur in my life end up with at least one quote from the movie being quipped. I have had the single dvd edition for a while and decided that the extras were a must have. Every scene in the film has so much atmosphere and the writing is impeccable. The characters, although few, are well defined and developed to an extent between the opening and ending of the film. The performances are outstanding, portraying the desperation of the time outstandingly. Although the plot itself tries hard not to complicate things the movie doesn't suffer from a lack of motion. There is never a boring moment and the story is told in a very unique manner. I would recommend this to anyone with a dvd player ...

    "Bring me the finest wines available to humanity...."

    In this film there is very little plot but don't let that put you off. In recent years Richard E Grant's debut film has become a cult classic. The film centres on the two main characters in the title, both out of work actors that live in a rodent infested, filthy flat in London at the end of the sixties. They decide to get away from it all and borrow Withnail's uncles cottage but Marwood(I) soon finds there are strings attached. The dialogue in this film is fantastically well written and although nothing really happens you'll be sorry when it's over.
