I enjoyed the HBO series ROME immensely, and have purchased several related items, including a book and this music CD. When watching the series (or any film) the music is sometimes "in the background", not fully apparent. Nevertheless, it contributes powerfully to the experience of film as a whole, and the music of ROME is no exception, being very much a "star" of the series in its own right. While not an attempted recreation or scholarly conjecture of what ancient Roman music was, the ROME CD music soundtrack succeeds is evoking a sense of ancient Rome and the people and places over which its influence was exerted. I especially like the opening signature theme, and also a dance melody which was played in one episode at a party at the character Vorenus' home. The only "drawback" for me is that there isn't more lively music on the CD. Much of it is pensive and slow, genuine "mood" music that, while good, sounds repetitious in places, seems to drag on forever, and makes one want to die in the arena. One track also has snips of dialogue from the series played over the music, and this could have been done without, as it detracts and seems intrusive. Overall though, this is a wonderful CD and a great way to "stay in touch" with the experience of HBO's ROME, now that the series has ended.Read full review
Jeff Beal did a creative job, writing the score for the ROME series on HBO. If you are into soundtracks, enjoy music that reflects a scene and personifies both characters and era, this CD will suit you. The tracks are relatively short, but capture the essence of ROME's first season. The score works with a smaller sized ensemble, for the most part. There are some sections of the recording that sound a little more orchestral, however, Beal's excellence is his writing for an intimate group of musicians: primarily oboe, horns, and harp. With such a diverse sounding group, he also added folk-type instruments from other eastern cultures adding a nice touch to the score. This soundtrack is NOT "Gladiator". If you're looking for huge orchestral moments, it's NOT for you. It's smaller scale, but extremely well-done. If you are a fan of the HBO series, the CD will be most enjoyable, taking you back once again into ROME.Read full review
I loved to watch this show's first season, and hardly can wait to see the second here in Germany. The music for it fits well! It's a great soundtrack that takes you back to the past Roman times and legends. It is weaved by sweet exotic melodies that ring in your ears for a very long time. And what's most important and to me marks a very excellent score is that you can listen to all the tunes without watching the movie. The pictures of ancient Rome and its magnificence automatically enter your head. Jeff Beal has done a great job! Thanks!!
This CD of Rome`s music is excellent. I think it would appeal even to those who haven`t watched the series first. After receiving the CD I placed it in my player, turned off the lights and closed my eyes. I was immediately transported back to all the drama of Rome, the rich sights and intriguing sounds. This music evokes emotions and weaves a complex story. Loved it!
It sounds odd to some, and I do have an odd taste of music, but I wanted the "Rome" T.V. series theme, and since I had to get the whole C.D. from the iTunes store or get it so physically either way, I decided I might as well spend a couple bucks extra to get the tangible copy for the one song anyway. Definitely some beautiful music!
