About this product

Product Information

Monty Roberts is a real-life horse whisperer -- an American original whose gentle training methods reveal the depth of communication possible between man and animal. He can take a wild, high-strung horse who has never before been handled and persuade that horse to accept a bridle, saddle, and rider in 30 minutes. His powers may seem like magic, but his amazing 'horse sense' is based on a lifetime of experience. Roberts started riding at the age of two, and at the age of 13 he went alone into the high deserts of Nevada to study mustangs in the wild. What he learned there changed his life forever. In The Man Who Listens to Horses, he tells about his early days as a rodeo rider in California, his violent horse-trainer father, who was unwilling to accept Monty's unconventional training methods, his friendship with James Dean, his struggle to be accepted in the professional horse-training community, and the invitation that changed his life -- to demonstrate his method of join-up to the Queen of England. From his groundbreaking work with horses, Roberts has acquired an unprecedented understanding of nonverbal communication, an understanding that applies to human relationships as well. He has shown that between parent and child, employee and employer (he's worked with over 250 corporations, including General Motors, IBM, Disney, and Merrill Lynch), and abuser and abused, there are forms of communication far stronger than the spoken word and that they are accessible to all who will learn to listen.

The book kept my 9 year old interested. She loved it.

I bought this for my 9 year old daughter who loves horses. The book kept her interest and she would tell me everything she learned about horse behavior in the book.

  • Insightful approach to horse psychology and training

Not only is this book an interesting autobiography, but it offers a great deal of insight into how a horse interprets and reacts to human behavior from its natural (instinctive) point of view. This information allows a handler/rider to address the horse in a manner which will bring out the desired behavior with minimal conflict. While not every discovery in the book is as brand new as the author seems to think (such as the submissive chewing or Unterlegenheitsgebaerde)and the patented "Join-up" method is not that different from a normal session in the round pen, it is as good a guide to starting a horse as most (but does not include equitation lessons). Nevetheles, the writing and methods are highly subjective and I prefer to take a few suggestioms from the book rather than ...

  • This book transforms you AND your horse

This is a fabulous book for anyone who owns and loves horses. Monty studied the wild mustangs in their natural setting and observed their rich nonverbal communication with one another. He has codified that language into a simple set of behavioral cues that vastly improves the relationship between horses and humans. I plan to use his methods to "start" the 10 young colts in our weaning pasture. I've already used it with one young colt who was absolutely wild with fear and needed to go to the vet. In less than 30 minutes that baby was calm and trusting, easy to load into the horse trailer and the vets at UGA commented on how easy he was to work with. If you love horses, read this book. It will forever change the way you interact with your horses.

  • The Man Who Listens to Horses

My brother was going through a very difficult divorce. He was looking for something uplifting and I had read this book several years before. It's about a colorblind man who was badly abused by his father for demonstrating an exceptional ability to understand animals. This author, Monty Roberts, is in my mind a modern day hero ot the old classic style. He not only rose from abuse, but he now trains all of Queen Elizabeth's horses. The best thing about the author is that he isn't bitter. This book offers hope for the human heart. Verleen Ukiah, CA

  • The Astonishing Real Horse Whisperer

This autobiography by Monty Roberts is a fascinating (and sometimes heart-breaking) look into the life a man who devoted all his skill and energy to making a better life for horses, and the people who own them. What a feeling of admiration for this amazing human being. Loved the connection with Queen Elizabeth II, wow that experiences came from that. I plan to read it again soon.
