When Texas cattleman Bick Benedict (Hudson) goes to Virginia in the early 1920s to buy a prize stallion, he falls in love with Leslie Lynnton (Taylor), an aristocratic, independent-minded beauty, and they quickly marry. He takes her back to Reata, his 600,000-acre ranch, where sister Luz (Mercedes McCambridge), the family matriarch, does her best to make Leslie feel unwelcome. Leslie is appalled by the second-class status accorded to women and racist attitudes toward the local Mexicans, neither of which seem to bother her husband. Out of compassion, she befriends surly ranch hand Jett Rink (James Dean), who comes to worship her from afar, envying Bick for both his wealth and his wife. A MUST FOR JAMES DEAN FANS AND ANY MOVIE LOVER.
I've been a James Dean fan ever since High School. His charismatic acting in these three memorable films which are featured in this complete James Dean collection is a must for movie lovers who enjoy being transported back to the days of early sixties cinema. My favorite movie was "Rebel Without a Cause", because it sincerely portrays the innocence of young teenagers growing up and facing the adversities of juvenile delinquency and a youth who is sadly misguided in the wrong direction. Next, was John Steinbeck's "East of Eden", a very poignant revelation of the two brother's rivalry for their father's love, and a constant disappointment in one son's attempts to make good. Lastly, Edna Ferber's novel, "Giant", one of the greatest epic films ever made about two generations of Texans and a ... I've been a James Dean fan ever since High School. Film won oscar for best direction. This was James Dean's last film. Cinema at its best. I highly recommend this collection of James Dean films for all movie fans. All three films are bright and clear and the sound is outstanding. Also, they are presented in the original widescreen format as shown in theaters. Cast: Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo and Jim Backus, Ann Doran, Rochelle Hudson, Corey Allen, Edward Platt, Nick Adams and Dennis Hopper. Cast: Julie Harris, Raymond Massey, Jo Van Fleet, Burl Ives, Richard Davalos and Albert Dekker. Cast: Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, Carroll Baker, Jane Withers, Chill Wills. There are many pan-and-scan or Full Screen versions of the three classics: "East of Eden," "Rebel Without A Cause," and "Giant. Stop buying them. This collection is painstakingly restored to the widescreen, full sound experience of original theater-going. So much of importance happens in the periphery of the cinerama era that you cannot appreciate the direction or photography -- the reason a director and performers have created the scenes the way they did. Perspective makes Dean's performances much more powerful, more integrated with characters or situations we miss in close up FS. There are films that simply must be restored and presented with this care. You like I probably want to ...
