"You Wanted the Best, You Got the Best... The Hottest Band in the World... KISS! This 4-disc DVD Set features: #1 - TV interviews ('78, '79) & Attack of the Phantoms (full-length TV movie from '79) #2 - Australia TV clips and 1980 Sydney concert #3 - The famous RIO concert of 1983, the MTV interview (first appearance w/o makeup), the first concert w/o makeup in Portugal, and 2 concerts in America #4 - Dynasty Tour Largo Concert in 1979 There are some important moments in this collection, like the boys appearing on MTV and discussing their new life without makeup, and how it would not affect their playing: Yeah, right - check out the first concert they played in Lisbon, Portugal on October 11, 1983. Which is more shocking - How confused and sedated the audience looks or how out of tune and uptight the newly unveiled Kiss appear on stage without their protective gear? It is truly fun watching it unfold. Also interesting is the inclusion of so much footage of Eric Carr on drums. This really became his band during this era, because he was the one guiding force who helped float the sinking ship that was Kiss in the early '80's. Without his enthusiasm and rock'n'roll drumming style, Kiss might not have ever maintained its popularity during some really down years for the band. But the true highlight of this set is the famous, highly sought-after 1983 concert in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Kiss did not let its sagging, wilting drawing power in America dampen its appeal in other countries. The Rio appearances turned out to be the largest crowd ever for Kiss - unlike the 60-70,000 they had played for in the States, nearly 200,000 squeezed into Maracana Stadium to watch the last great performance of Kiss onstage with makeup and costumes. And the mob of fans didn't let a little thing like speaking Portuguese stop them from chanting like wild dogs to every single Kiss song, from "Cold Gin" to "War Machine." This lineup of Gene and Paul, with newcomers Carr on drums and Vinnie Vincent on lead guitar, gave its most energetic and potent performance since the days of playing at Cobo Hall in the late '70's. Gene Simmons is especially in his element in this show, wearing his silver suit of armor and growling to a legion of rabid fans watching his every move! The set of songs that they performed here show why Kiss was one of the greatest live acts ever in rock'n'roll history. They sweated and sang and danced their butts off, whether the critics supported them or not. Kissology: Volume 2 is a must for any serious Kiss fan!Read full review
I purchased Volume two of Kissology from eBay for the WalMart exclusive bonus disc that I think is no longer available. The bonus concert featured a couple songs I wasn't aware that they had played live, specifically "Radioactive." The bonus concert was okay. The sound wasn't very good and the performance not particularly inspired. The thing that irritates me about the set however are the main discs. The newer shows are heavily edited for profanity in between songs when Paul Stanley is working the crowd. I fear that this is due to the set originating from WalMart. I have Volume 3 I purchased elsewhere and I don't recall my sensitive ears being protected in that set. Maybe its edited as well and I just didn't notice, but I don't think so. All in all I suppose my complaints are just being nit-picky but I don't appreciate censorship of the shows. The shows themselves are all first rate. The movie "Attack of the Phantom" looks really good in this transfer. Whatever problems it has a pristine picture showcasing all of its cheesy 70s full-on camp glory. The Vinnie Vincent footage is eye opening. I was a little surprised at how well he fit in with the band, particularly om the older material. Eric Carr shines throughout and I had waited years to see the complete Unmasked tour show in Australia. Perhaps the best of the three Kissology sets. 5 star shows with a star taken away for the censorship.Read full review
It was nice to finally see some of this footage without staring through a grainy picture and inaudible sound of a fifth generation bootleg. Many of these clips have been around in various forms forever, but never painstakingly cleaned up, like they are here. Case in point would be the Australia show from 1980. Wow it looked great and has some rare performances of Shandi and others from the Unmasked album that have not been performed since. Most bootlegs of this show are GARBAGE. The are many great TV spots and interviews that were new to me. It was sad to see the bickering that went on after the departure of Peter Criss. You get a couple different viewpoints from some interviews of the time. Another BIG item is the release of "KISS Meets the Phantom" (titled here as: KISS In Attack of the Phantoms - The European Theatrical release that contains some better special effects and different songs...virtually the same cheesy movie) finally "officially" released in the US. You get over 6 full hours of concert footage, interviews, videos, and more with audio commentary by Gene, Paul & Bruce. AND...Depending on where you bought your box set, it will contain a bonus DVD. Mine came from Best Buy and has a bonus disc from their 1988 Performance at the Ritz in New York. The Wal-Mart set contains the Largo 1979 show from the Dynasty Tour. Don't Miss Out on this one!!Read full review
I bought volume 1 and volume 3 at a store here in vegas. I couldn't find 2 anywhere, and it has the best years (in my opinion), so of course off to ebay I went. I got this for a lower price than the ones I bought in the store and it was like new. There is hours of listening, and watching in this set. some great music, great info of a great band. I collect dvds and this was something I had to have and I'm very happy with it. Some of the videos included are the best the band made. I LOVE GENE SIMMONS, this also represents him well. lots of gene.
Bought this for my husband to complete the collection. He was very pleased with the quality and the ahape it came in. Loves the extra disc. Thanks so much for this awesome dvd.
